Angie’s BOOMCHICKAPOP – White Cheddar Puffs
When I first heard of Angie’s as a brand, I was under the impression they were a one trick pony, only specializing in popcorn. To my pleasant surprise they have branched out into other corn products, namely cheese puffs. While I do prefer my corn snacks to be crunchy and substantial, I like to keep an open mind and try something nice and light every once in a while.
These have a somewhat of an aged cheddar smell. While I don’t consider it a particularly strong or pungent smell, I can see how some may consider it to be on the stronger side. Worth noting is that these are baked as opposed to fried, so I imagine they won’t feel as greasy or soft and puffy. Personally I like baked even if it usually means its drier and stiffer.
Similar to any other puff, these melt in your mouth and light and fluffy, almost like eating nothing. While I prefer crunchier, harder textures, even I have a hard time denying the allure of a nice airy puff. Puffs are one of those things where it’s easy to replicate, so you only notice the bad ones. This isn’t one of the bad ones, and has the right balance of puff to it without leaving behind too much grit. I’m honestly a little surprised given that these are baked as opposed to fried. Generally baked is is more gritty and not as airy or puffy, but these are just as good in that aspect to the fried ones.
The flavour is fairly natural tasting – it’s mild but not to the point that it lacks flavour and has a good cheddar flavour that’s not too subtle, but not too in your face. It has a home made flavour to it, if that makes sense. Like something your grandma decided to make on Sunday morning with some spare ingredients she had lying around and some fancy new cheddar she wants to experiment with.
Overall, these are very addictive as most puffs can be, and you’ll find yourself plowing through half the bag before you feel anything. The flavour is very natural and mild in a good way, and before you know it you’re up to your forearms in cheese powder from reaching to the bottom of the bag. Sure these are more expensive than your typical, more common brands like Cheetos, but I would recommend giving these a try. They are definitely worth the higher price tag.
