Arriba – Mexican Street Corn Tortilla Chips

I don’t think I’ve had actual Mexican street corn yet (not that I can recall). Having no context on it I just sort of assumed it would be just a straight forward corn on the cob situation. The more I look at the packaging, the more I realize that’s unlikely to be the case. Seems like I’m going to be in for a ride here.

The first thing I think of when I smell these is tacos. I’m actually kind of reminded of Taco Bell Doritos I had as a kid. It’s not the same, but it does remind me of them. This puts the chips at a disadvantage already, since nostalgia is a dangerous mistress.

The flavour has got a bit of sweetness and it’s got a good balance of spicy and zesty. I say spicy but the heat isn’t all that noticeable and it just has a slight build up. It’s like some sort of attempt at heat but it doesn’t get there. The lime flavour on the tail end is really nice and aids in the story that this chip tries to tell. The prominent flavour throughout is the onion and garlic.

Smells like a well seasoned taco.

The texture of these is pretty standard from what you expect in typical tortilla chips but slightly thicker and I’m always a big fan of bigger crunches. There’s not much else to say about the texture here, which in this case is a good thing since it meets that high expectation I have for tortilla chips.

They look pretty plain.

After trying these I did some research on what exactly Mexican street corn is supposed to taste like. As it turns out, it’s corn that is grilled and is coated in a sauce that includes mayo, sour cream, cheese, chili powder and lime. As with anything else there’s variation on the dish but it seems like those are just some of the key ingredients. Knowing what the flavour is supposed to emulate hasn’t really changed how I feel about the flavour – I still enjoy it and would do it again. If anything, it makes me want to try the real thing just to see what I’ve been missing out on.

Would I do it again? Yes, yes I would. It doesn’t seem like a flavour that is carried widely, but if I do find it, you bet I’m going to get me some more.

Salty goodness.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
