Befco Rice Crackers – Pizza
I’ve talked at length before about creativity in food, and how eventually everything will be combined with everything else at some point. There’s only a finite number of edible things on this planet, and even less when you rule out stuff that is either disgusting or vomit-inducing. Today’s snack is one such item. The inevitability part I mean, not the disgusting part. Or at least, I won’t know yet until this review is over.
This is supposed to be a pizza flavoured rice cracker – or as I like to think of it, the marriage of east meets west. Rice crackers are something very near and dear to my heart, having grown up as the main snack of choice. This snack looks to use a pizza flavouring instead of the traditional soy. I’m always up to try interesting new fusion ideas.
These certainly smell like a standard pizza box. You can smell the tomato and the hint of cheese, as well as crust oddly enough. I’ve been fortunate enough that I’ve never had to do delivery as a part time or full time job, and could find employment in non-food related industries. I can’t imagine being a pizza delivery person, having to be stuck in a car in the cold winter with a bunch of pizzas and their tempting aroma wafting through the car. I’m fairly certain I’d get fired the first day on the job because I ended up sneaking a slice of the pizza on my way to deliver it. I’m telling you, I can’t be trusted around a pizza box for more than 15 minutes alone. It’s just cruel.
The first thing I think of is unsurprisingly, tomato sauce when I have it. It does a really good job of tasting like a slice of cheese pizza, with a fairly standard, but tasty tomato sauce. Something I’m not sure is intentional or not, but the aftertaste that follows the consumption of a few of these triangles is that of a Neapolitan pizza crust. That slight burnt, doughy flavour that it leaves in your mouth, this snack does to which is very strange. Strange but not unwelcome.
The texture is pretty standard rice cracker affair – it’s not particularly hard, and has more of a puffed texture to it, than the hard, crunchy rice crackers. You don’t need to chew very hard for these. While I do prefer harder, crunchier rice crackers, these are quite pleasant and you won’t be hurting yourself on any sharp edges anytime soon.
The overall piece, texture and flavour come together surprisingly well. I’m actually reminded of a somewhat airy, but dehydrated pizza, specifically the crust. The pieces are soft enough that if I had some water while eating these, I might think I’m chewing on a small piece of pizza. That’s actually quite impressive.
I like these quite a bit, but being that they are pizza flavoured, I don’t see myself eating these too often. Given how easy it is to get pizza these days, I’d probably end up craving an actual pizza even more and just end up ordering one. If however, you want the taste of pizza without the experience of eating an actual pizza, this would be perfect. Just be wary that if you’re like me, trying to sate the pizza temptation with these will only stoke the flames of passion, and land you in a world of pizza anyways. Consumer discretion is advised.
