Black Thunder – Cacao

You know you’re in for a good time when you see cacao beans all over the package. The selling point of these is they use 40% cacao from Ecuador. Again, I am not sophisticated or experienced enough to know how different that tastes, but I’m expecting something different enough. Not that there’s anything wrong with the base form of Black Thunder. Marketing gimmick or no, this is going to be a decent product.

Melted and damaged appearance aside, there’s 8 little square pieces. Admittedly, something about somewhat symmetrical shapes like squares make me want to play with my food and stack them. Something triggers my inner child and I am reminded of those wooden blocks in my toddlership. And just like back then, I really want to shove these in my mouth.

I assure you these are still safe to eat.

The chocolate here is more heavy in the cocoa flavour and not quite as sweet. What you end up with is something that’s more akin to a semisweet chocolate, and have the rich, almost decadent quality in it’s flavour that you would expect from a higher cacao content bar. Something about darker chocolates or treats with a stronger or more noticeable cacao flavour just feel more premium or fancy, like you would eat it on special occasions. Sort of like when grandma brings out the good china for special dinner guests.

Looks 5/10, taste 9/10.

The texture is quite similar to the usual Black Thunder. In combination with the darker chocolate though, it almost feels like I’m eating a cookie or a dehydrated brownie – very rich and leaving me feeling satisfied. I also feel like a glass of milk would really hit the spot after eating these. For some reason it reminds me of eating semisweet chocolate chips by the handful without the cookie. Let’s not pretend like we haven’t all done something like that.

Overall a pretty solid offering. The only downside is that like many other seasonal flavours by Black Thunder, these may or may not make a return. It’s a shame, since this is pretty good, and while it isn’t too drastic of a change, it’s still enough to shape things up and keep things interesting. I would absolutely get this one again.

No shortage of calories in this pouch.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
