Black Thunder – Purple Sweet Potato

My experience thus far with sweet potato flavours is, middling at best. I’ve had a few standout products, but they are awash a sea of mid or mediocre ones. Maybe it’s just me and my general indifference to the root vegetable, but I haven’t had a whole lot of luck finding something that speaks to me.

It smells very much like a yam. I have to say, the line between sweet potato and Play-Doh doesn’t seem that far off, so I am glad to say it is more like a sweet potato and not a child play toy. I’m honestly wondering if it’s really just me or if other people see what I mean as well.

The appearance is reminiscent of a sweet potato dessert soup.

What I will say is that these taste a little different from a regular sweet potato, and has a bit more of a floral sweetness to it. I find some sweet potato flavoured chocolate snacks taste like Play-Doh, but this actually tastes like a sweet potato so hats off to them. Whether you like it or not will depend on that though, because it’s all sweet potato all day. It has a flavour that I would describe as creamy and a simple sweetness, with very slight hints of earthy and floral that you get from a typical root veggie. It has a sort of bland flavour to it, almost giving it a “clean” feel if that makes sense.

There’s no doubt as to what this flavour is.

The texture is no different from a regular Black Thunder, with the crunch of the light chocolate layer and the biscuit and cookie pieces, all coming together for a deceptively light snack. You wouldn’t think it looking at it, but it’s not dense in a traditional sense. The texture and mouthfeel of this is similar enough that you really would only be getting this over the regular bar if you enjoy the taste of sweet potatoes.

My relationship with sweet potatoes, yams or whatever else of the same ilk, has not changed dramatically over the years. I can understand why some people enjoy it and why it’s a big deal, but personally I’m just not all that crazy about it. Will that stop me from trying new chocolates and candies? Probably not. Will I end up trying a single product more than once? Unlikely. All this to say, I see the value of this flavour but it’s simply not for me. Go and see if you can get one and try it for yourself.

I am…indifferent to this.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
