Bourbon – Mochi Truffe Shine Muscat Grape

Bourbon has been host to many a delicious mochi chocolate flavours, and I’ve reviewed many of them as well. For the most part they tended to be flavours that mesh well with chocolate, be they pastries or chocolate based simulacrums. Seeing a fruit flavoured one, grape especially is a bit of a stretch, but they haven’t let me down so far so why not give this a shot?

Similar to every other release, these come in two individual packs in a box, and each pack containing 4 pieces. It also comes with a handy dandy wooden stick for eating them hands free. Trust me you’ll want to use it, because these can get very messy very quickly. Hope you don’t have allergies when you eat these.

Shockingly, the smell of grape is actually overcome by the strong smell of cocoa. That isn’t to say it doesn’t smell strong, just that the chocolate comes across that well. These are very round, and if I were a less cautious person I would grab these with my hand and try to bounce it or play with it.

Might as well eat all four to make sure I get while they’re fresh, right?

The cocoa dusting on the outside has a straightforward, strong flavour that isn’t sweet and has a nice chocolatey quality to it. It pairs well with the mochi texture, and helps to subdue the more sweet filling. It’s sort of like a ganache filling, with an equally strong muscat flavour. The flavour while strong, isn’t overpowering and it’s not overly sweet. It pairs with the cocoa coating to deliver a flavour I can best describe as a premium version of the chocolate covered grape gummies that Meiji is famous for. It’s not the first combination you think of when contemplating chocolate covered fruits, but it just works.

Can you tell how soft and squishy this is?

The mochi itself is very chewy, and very tasty. Pretty impressive feat for a mochi that is prepackaged. The inside has a smooth, semi-solid quality to it like a ganache. The whole piece comes together to be both very soft, and very chewy. It’s an overall delight texture experience, and really the main draw of the product. Just like all the other flavours before it, I am overcome with an overwhelming desire to poke the mochi to feel how soft it is between my fingers, but I won’t be doing that because things will get very messy, very quickly.

While the flavour can seem a bit strange, like a buggy Bethesda game, it just works. I would get these again, though if there’s a more typical flavour like dark chocolate I may opt for that instead. These are good though, and I would recommend everyone who likes grapes and mochi give these a try.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
