Bourbon – Rich Matcha Brownie

These are mini brownie squares that combine matcha with fudgy chocolate. I haven’t had much brownies in comparison to other baked goods like cookies. I find they are usually quite rich and heavy, and it’s rare I have ready access to a glass of milk. Something about a glass of milk just makes brownies better, amirite?

Bourbon has done right by me many times in the past, so I felt like trying out their brownies would be a fairly safe choice. After all, it’s hard to screw up brownies. Right? If they can do ganache in a mochi so well, surely a brownie is no challenge. Right?!

8 is the magic number.

The package has a total of 8 individually packaged brownie squares. Clearly these are meant to be shared. Or help with portion control. Maybe both? Each pack has a decently sized square of a brownie. I specify square because the shape is much closer to a square than a rectangle. The brownie itself is a thin top layer of chocolate, a matcha center layer and the bottom layer of chocolate, along with a chocolate dip on that bottom layer.

Don’t be intimidated by it’s angry look.

The texture is a pretty good balance of moist, fudgy brownie. The bottom layer is a chocolate coating, and the top is more of a dense, but moist cakey texture. It’s a mix of cakey but also fudgy so that you have something to chew on but it has a nice rich melt to it. While this works just fine without milk, I can’t help but wonder if this would have been better with some milk.

8 pieces is not enough.

The flavour is a pretty decadent matcha flavour that’s got a nice, deep earthy herbal quality that is cornerstone of any decent matcha. The slight bitterness of it balances well with the rich cocoa flavour which isn’t overly sweet, but still enough to balance things out. The flavours work very harmoniously together, and far exceeds my expectation of a per-packaged brownie. I might expect something this tasty from a fancy boutique bakery, but to get it from a large, mass market confectionery is honestly kind of surprising.

So unsurprisingly, this is very tasty and another hit by Bourbon. Where the surprise comes in is this was far better than I was expecting from a mass market, prepackaged brownie but here we are. Having said that, there’s no doubt I would get this again if I see it. If you see this, get it, at any cost.

Honestly not too bad as far as calories go.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
