Bourbon – Vanilla White Mochi

It feels like not that long ago that I discovered the magic that is Bourbon prepackaged mochis. I’m no food scientist, so I don’t know how they get packaged mochi to be so soft and chewy, but deep down a part of me knows it can’t possibly be natural. Or could it? Regardless, they are just so tasty I can’t keep away from ingesting those potentially dangerous chemicals. I must have more!

While vanilla is kind of a meh, boring flavour to me, I must admit the packaging and the adorable little snowman sold me. Well, that and Bourbon mochis are pretty good in general. This flavour is supposed to represent vanilla ice cream. Something about the colour and design on the package makes it clear it was designed as more of a winter flavour. Or at least evoke the joy and happiness of building snowmen in the quiet of winter. I could also be way off and looking into things too deeply, but something about the packaging just draws me in and won’t let go.

Trust me you’ll want to use the stick.

As per usual, each box has two separately packaged trays, each with four mochis and a helpful wooden stick for eating them. Also like the other ones, the mochi skin does a good job encapsulating everything, so the sticky mochi skin is really all I smell. That skin smells kind of like putty or play-doh. Is play-doh still a thing?

Biting into one of these, I’m reminded of why I keep buying these prepackaged mochis by Bourbon. The mochi skin is surprisingly chewy and soft, and a little sticky. Pretty much what you’d expect from a fresh mochi. The vanilla cream filling is not quite as dense as the chocolate filling I’ve tried before, but it’s still fairly nice and has a ganache texture to it. It’s not overly airy like a cheap ice cream, but also not overly dense, and it has an almost melt in your mouth texture.

The little flecks of vanilla are a nice touch.

Flavour is of a higher quality vanilla ice cream. It’s not overly sweet, and has a fairly straightforward vanilla flavour to it. It’s got a smooth and creamy flavour, which I’m not sure how else to describe it as, other than being vanilla. I guess I’d say it’s closer to a French vanilla than the generic vanilla. Ultimately it’s a decent quality vanilla flavour to it. At no point was it too obvious or crass, and like a well behaved student of etiquette, it sits silently by without stepping or speaking out of line.

While I don’t enjoy vanilla that much as a flavour, I can appreciate what they did with this. I’d say if you do like vanilla, this is a solid flavour to go for. If nothing else though, I’d recommend this to anyone who enjoys mochi. The vanilla flavour isn’t overpowering and is fairly neutral so it’s a good way to get into the Bourbon mochis. I’d recommend these on texture alone. They really nail that part of the equation each time.

Plenty of calories to go around

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
