Cheez-It Snap’d – Cheddar Sour Cream & Onion

I’ve mentioned before that ideas are like liquids in a pool – eventually, all the different colours and smells coalesce in the pool to become one. The same is said for foods, where fusion is a fancy way of saying we mixed two different flavours or textures and made a new one.

Unlike the usual Cheez-It crackers, these are thinner, and have a bit of a curve to them. These are crispier are that somewhat awkward middle ground between cracker and chip. These are not exactly a revolutionary idea, but it is one that seems to come and go every so often. The last I recall of someone trying to straddle the line between cracker and chip is Ritz. This is of course ignoring Crispers which has been around for decades, but we don’t think of it that way anymore.

I tried the original Cheez-It a few years back and it honestly wasn’t as great as I was led to believe. It basically tasted the same as the Canadian alternative known as Cheese Nibs. I somehow got it into my head that maybe they would be tastier or cheesier, but turns out it’s basically the same thing. Oh the disappointment. But at least this product is something new and has some fresh novelty, so let’s see how this one goes.

I can’t decide if it’s more cheese, or more sour cream.

Flavour is familar, not unlike Crispers. It’s like if you took their cheese flavour and mashed it with their sour cream and onion flavour. It has a noticeable cheddar flavour, but the sweet and tangy combination of the sour cream and onion is what is most noticeable and stays ever prominent throughout. At this point I feel we’ve either reached or passed the apex of sour cream and onion flavouring, and there’s really no excuse for screwing it up. Thankfully they have not, and it’s exactly as you would expect it to be.

These are well seasoned, that’s for sure.

The texture is like a curled, thin version of a Crispers as well. It nice, light and thin, but as you chew and it starts to melt away in your mouth, it leaves behind that slight dry, cloying feeling you get when you eat biscuits or crackers on it’s own. The sensation where it leaves behind this dust that cakes around your teeth and sort of gets stuck. It’s a classic biscuit or cracker eating experience. It’s also the same experience you get when you eat Crispers, incidentally.

All in all I would say this is pretty solid snack I would consider trying other flavours of. It’s nothing revolutionary or out there, but it does what it sets out to do well. An interesting texture, and a good flavour, it hits all the minimum requirements for a repeat buy.

Being half cracker doesn’t make this any healthier than a chip.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
