Chex Mix – White Cheddar

Chex Mix is something that brings me back to my childhood, shoveling down salty snacks while trying to balance the filler pieces like pretzels. I even had a specific order I would eat them, like getting through the filler pieces or ones I didn’t like so I could focus on the ones I do. I came across this bag and decided to take a trip down memory lane.

There’s six different pieces here – the classic corn chex, wheat chex, rye chips, bread sticks (which they call squiggle), and the round and square pretzels. I haven’t had Chex Mix in ages, but I remember another brand called Bits n Bites being the predominant chex mix. For a long time it was very difficult to find Chex Mix here in my neck of Canada unless you go to very specific stores. Bits n Bites was different in that they had different pieces, but the concept was largely the same. I remember the biggest different being that they had cheerios in them instead of two varieties of pretzels.

It smells very cheesy. Slightly stinky.

I’ll go over each piece briefly. Right off the bat, the obvious call out here is the rye chips – I love rye chips and these are no different. The very dense, hard crunch of the brown morsels are amazing, and they go well with basically any mix. Even on their own they are great, and my only complaint is there aren’t nearly enough of them in this mix.

The pretzels are honestly very generic, kind of boring pretzels. If you like them, well here they are. Nothing special about them, though I guess if you like having fun with shapes the round one isn’t as interesting to eat as the square one which has more of a variety in the experience, whatever that may mean for you.

Moving on to the bread stick, or the squiggle, this is my least favourite piece in the bunch. it’s surprisingly dense, and kind of dry. I’m sure some people enjoy this, but I feel like in this mix it doesn’t add much and is mostly filler, more so than pretzels. I would actually prefer getting more pretzels than more of these.

The white cheddar coating makes itself ever present.

The wheat chex are very light and have a good crunch to them. I’m reminded of the cereal I had as a kid, that had a distinct fiber sensation to it as you chewed on them. You basically felt like you were eating grains as you ate these. These work great in the right mix with a bit of seasoning though, so I enjoy these thoroughly.

It’s counterpart, the corn chex are much airier and equally light. They are airy enough that they can sort of melt in your mouth if you leave them there for a few seconds, and not leave behind much grit or residue after. I feel like these are probably the reason most people get this mix, and is the highlight for me apart from the rye chips. This is the star player that you build the rest of the team around.

The flavour is pretty solid white cheddar – the seasoning reminds me of the same one they would use on popcorn or chips. One thing to note is that they are pretty generous with the seasoning – it’s basically caked on to the point where you can see what looks like a layer of white on the chex pieces. Those holes really trap all the seasoning to deliver an impactful flavour punch. Enjoyable to the last bite.

Overall, I enjoyed these, and wish it was more common to find here in Canada. My only complaint really, is there’s too much filler in the form of bread sticks and pretzels. If there was less bread sticks I’d get these way more often, but it’s not a deal breaker so I would still recommend giving this a try.

I bet most of the calories come from the fillers.
