Cookie It Up – Double Chocolate Shorts

I liked these so much I had to go out and buy some more. The white chocolate cranberries flavour set a high standard, so we’ll see how these stack up against them. These seem like a bit of overkill for me, but I know some people who love overdosing on chocolate, and I imagine this flavour would be quite popular as well.

This is marketed as double chocolate because there’s white and milk chocolate chips, but I consider it triple chocolate because the cookie itself is basically a chocolate cookie. The smell alone is just….chocolate. All I can smell is chocolate. Well that and butter obviously. But unlike the other ones, these ones smell more of chocolate than butter, which should give you an idea how chocolatey these are.

It’s like sniffing a freshly baked chocolate cake.

The cookie has a somewhat typical texture for butter shortbread cookies – they are firm and crumbly on the outside, but they melt in the mouth pretty quickly. The chocolate chips are not melty, but rather, have a crunchy texture to them. I had to do a double take on the package, because I thought I was munching on nuts at first. After getting through the outer shell though, it’s obviously its chocolate, as it has that somewhat melty texture on the inside. I think it works quite well, against the backdrop of a soft, melty cookie to give some contrast. I’m obviously bias because I love that crunch, but I find cookies are usually better when they aren’t the same texture throughout.

So much going on here.

For whatever reason, these seem bland but not in terms of flavour. These aren’t as sweet as I was expecting, which is a positive, but they feel bland somehow. If I had to guess, it’s probably because the whole cookie is just a giant mash up of chocolate. The cookie is chocolate, the add ins are chocolate, so the flavour of it all kind of melds into a singularity of pure chocolate. I like chocolate, but when it comes to cookies I prefer more contrast or variety in the profile. Otherwise it ends up feeling bland, even if it’s actually got a nice flavour.

Chocolate…everywhere.

If you like chocolate and don’t mind overdosing on it, these cookies are for you. While the texture is good, the flavour is a bit on the bland side, probably because it’s chocolate overkill for me. I much prefer the other variety that has cranberries to mix things up a bit. The positive of these cookies though, is they aren’t overly sweet like the mass market brands. If the cranberry ones aren’t available, I might consider getting these if I’m feeling a hankering for butter cookies. The biggest problem is it’s really, really hard to eat just one or two of these…

Mmmm…fat…

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
