Doritos Dinamita – Chile-lime Burn

Something about rolled tortilla chips speaks to me. Between these and Takis, I’m learning that I am drawn to rolled chips. And now I’m super curious on what a rolled potato chip would taste like, if even possible, which seems doubtful. I find it interesting the package indicates that these are made in Canada, which almost implies to me it somehow isn’t as common internationally. Either way I’m excited.

Visually these look very similar to the Fuego Takis, and honestly kind of smell similar too. The difference from a visual aspect between this and Takis is that these have a more consistent looking coating. Takis seem to be a bit inconsistent, where some don’t have enough coating and some have too much. Not sure how you want to interpret that, whether it means their factory is more or less automated, but it’s mostly just an observation. The one thing they both have in common is I sense an overwhelming sense of spicy dread. Here we go…

These things burn. You know how some things burn your throat, while others have more of a tongue burn? I find these to burn my tongue, which personally hurts more than the throat burn. I’m sure there’s a science reason but all I know is the tongue burns are the ones that have me panting like a dog. The flavour itself beyond the burn is not bad. I know some people enjoy the burn itself as a flavour, but I can’t say I do. The lime zest is quite strong, so I guess with the heat it pairs well.

Burning sticks of tasty death.

It would be a little boring if it was just straight up lime with no kick. When I think about how this is different from Takis, they aren’t really that different. It’s been a while since I’ve had Takis, but I believe this one is a bit hotter and has more consistent flavour, but I could be wrong.

Texture is where these things shine. A typical Dorito is not the thickest tortilla, but something about how these are rolled and made gives them just the right amount of crunch. Takis seem to use a thinner tortilla when it gets fried up, so it seems almost airy or light compared to these. While each has it’s own benefit, these are my preferred because they are crunchier and thicker, and I love them harder.

Overall these are pretty solid, and as loathe as I am to admit, I kind of prefer them to Takis. The flavours are similar, but the big thing is these are thicker and have a heartier crunch to them which is a big thing for someone who is about textures like me. The coating is more consistent than Takis which helps make these less of a crap shoot each handful, which gives it another point.

I just close my eyes and ignore this as I scoff them down.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
