Doritos – Jalapeno Cheddar
Jalapeno is a flavour that I remember growing up with. When I first saw it in my neck of the woods, it seemed so interesting and mysterious. It wasn’t yet a mass market hit yet, and people were just experimenting with putting it into chips, snacks, candies even. Fast forward to today where jalapeno is basically a household spice and considered quite weak and unassuming for those who are more spice and heat inclined.
For someone like me, jalapeno on it’s own is usually not that interesting. It’s got a tendency to taste a little like banana for me oddly enough, so I like to have it paired with something else to keep things interesting. Cheese and jalapeno seems like a logical choice. Look at how popular jalapeno poppers are, surely not everyone can be wrong, right?
These have a pretty decent cheese flavour. These are practically identical in taste to the jalapeno cheddar Cheetos, which is surprising to no one. The jalapeno kick is fairly mild in this as well, and the heat can build after a few handfuls but it never gets very strong or to the point that I need to wipe the sweat off my brow. Thinking on it, it’s kind of great for it to be interchangeable with Cheetos. It just means if I’m feeling this flavour, I can choose between crunchy sticks or triangular corn chips. Options people, options!
Texture is standard affair for Doritos – got a decent crunch that’s crisp but not hard. As someone who prefers a thicker crunch, I take every opportunity I get to chomp down on the folded chips. They tend to be my favourite ones. Honestly isn’t much else to say about these – chances are if you haven’t had a Dorito you wouldn’t be interested in this product anyways. And if you are a fan, you know what the texture is, so I won’t belabour it.
Going into this, I was expecting it to taste exactly like the Cheetos of the same flavour. Not that it’s a bad thing, in fact that was the selling point for me. I’ve mentioned before that jalapeno tends to be super hot sometimes and tastes of banana for whatever reason. This doesn’t suffer from either of those qualities, and in my books that makes these highly bingeable, which is better or worse depending on where you are in life. I enjoyed these, and I can see myself getting these again.
