Doritos Late Night – Sizzlin’ Cheeseburger
Why is it called late night? I don’t really know. I’ve seen these limited edition flavours called late night since a few years back, but I never could figure out what it meant. Is it supposed to represent a night of eating and snacking after binge drinking and clubbing? If so I can sort of get the vibe. But then I feel like I’m missing something here, or maybe I’m just old now. Either way these are actually limited so I had to pay full price for these. My skin crawls a little at the thought, but science must go on.
The smell of these is very pickle forward. What I mean is the first thing I notice is the same smell that dill pickle flavours usually have. I am reminded of the dill pickle flavour Doritos had, except this is accompanied but other smells as well. Let’s see if the taste follows suit.

The flavour is unsurprisingly pickle first, but the combination of other flavours you get in a burger come shortly after – the onions, ketchup, mayo and grilled meat flavours are all quite clear and present. So much so in fact, that the first thing that came to mind was a Whopper from Burger King. Something about the combination of flavours and the distinct broiled quality that the meat flavour has, really triggers some nostalgia. I find myself enjoying this a lot for that reason. I assume if you don’t like burgers or Burger King specifically, you may not be a huge fan. My one complaint is at no point did cheese come across. Usually the cheese adds at least some flavour, but I can’t seem to find it.

I don’t have much to say about the texture here, since a Dorito is a Dorito, is a Dorito. It’s a very generic, triangular tortilla chip. Having been the brand to popularize it, it’s sometimes odd to think that it’s very different from the traditional style of tortilla chips. These are more crispy than crunchy, and feel like they have been specifically engineered to make you want to eat more. They don’t feel substantial, but still have enough crunch to satisfy the weakjaws. While truthfully I prefer more substantial bite, there’s no denying they have struck a good balance to get you hooked and addicted.
I will admit I was pleasantly surprised by these. It’s not every day a chip unlocks a core memory, and even less often that it unlocks a pleasant one. While corn chips aren’t my first idea for a cheeseburger flavoured chip, it does it quite well, and enough that I would get this again. For the record a potato chip seems more suitable, in theory at least.
