Double Dutch – Caramel Mini Waffle Bites
I’m a big fan of waffles, so it should come as no surprise that I would have an affinity towards a flat pressed version of one. Stroopwafels are a delightful sweet treat that I enjoy, though admittedly it’s not something that is often done fresh or made locally as far as I can tell. That being said I have found a few brands that do the packaged version well enough, Double Dutch being one of them.
In particular I’m a big fan of their minis, where you can have a smaller version of their classic one, and makes it easier to portion control. Unless you’re like me and end up gorging yourself on one too many. Caramel is close enough to a syrup filling that I imagine these won’t be too different or foreign to someone used to the regular or classic fillings.

These are super soft and chewy. The wafers are very doughy, and have a sort of wheaty texture to them. That also means it’s dry – the waffles on their own are quite so. The dryness of the two wafers is offset by the chewy, caramel syrup filling on the inside. It has a caramel like quality, it’s soft and sticky, but there isn’t that much of it. It’s just enough to keep everything nice and chewy but not enough that any of it is overly sticky. You end up with something that’s god a nice soft chew to it, but it sort of dissolves away as soon as it came, so overall it’s a clean finish.

The flavour is sort of wheaty, and the flavour and sweetness comes mostly from the caramel. There’s a distinct hint of cinnamon as well.It is distinct from the classic vanilla flavour in that it’s somewhat more straight forward and it’s not a particularly interesting caramel flavour. That being said it makes it a bit more neutral so you could potentially pair this with something if you so choose, though I find it to be sweet enough on it’s own. This would go nice with an ice cream or yogurt I bet.

I know many people eat their stroopwafels the classic way, by putting it on top of a steaming hot tea or coffee to let it soften up and make that middle layer gooey, but I am both too impatient for that, and I like them the way they are. While caramel is not my favourite flavour by Double Dutch, it’s good enough I would get these again.
