Dutch Crunch – Sour Cream & Dill
Dutch Crunch is Old Dutch’s line of kettle cooked potato chips. It’s been around for some time, but doesn’t really come to mind when I think of Old Dutch, probably because they have so many other lines of products that I think of the more common ones first. While not as common as some of the other brands, I do like a lot of what Old Dutch puts out, so I’m curious to see if that extends to their kettle chip line.
The flavour is largely dill pickle, and the sour cream is barley present. If it is, it’s mostly cutting the sharpness and and vinegary qualities of the usual dill pickle flavour. There is a bit of a sweetness that follows the strong pickle flavour that is mostly salty and briny. There is a tangy, almost sweet flavour which I assume is the sour cream that follows more on the back end. It might just be the strong pickle seasoning, but the only real downside is the actual potato flavour doesn’t come through very well. Depending on what you’re looking for that may or may not be a good thing. There is some additional resemblance to Miss Vickie’s in that it has a distinct fried flavour, which I assume is the oil they use. While not as evident as Miss Vickie’s, it’s certainly more obvious than say Kettle, which uses mostly sunflower oil that doesn’t affect the taste as much.

The texture is decently crunchy and hard, and is more of a thicker chip than say Miss Vickie’s. It’s not quite as thick or hard as a Kettle brand or Hardbite, but it does have enough of a texture of kettle that will scratch that itch. It also reminds me more of those restaurant style chips that have more of a french fry quality to them in taste and a little in texture. I guess it makes sense given that the packaging sort of gives off a restaurant or casual dining vibe to them. Not sure if that’s intentional or not.

Overall not bad when compared to some of the other major brands out there. I wouldn’t say it’s quite as to my liking as Hardbite or even Kettle, but it does enough to satisfy that need for a crunchier, heartier chip and for that reason I can see myself getting these again. Assuming it’s cheaper than Hardbite or Kettle of course.
