Duyvis – Provencal Tiger Nuts

I consider myself a tough wall to scale – I am open to trying new things, but that doesn’t mean I have low standards. If I get burned by something, it’s unlikely I will give said thing a second chance. Not that that’s an issue for Duyvis so far, but just something that popped into my head. Thankfully my prior experience with Tiger Nuts was surprisingly pleasant, so I wanted to dive a little deeper in the pool.

I’m not one for savoury peanut snacks typically, but after having tried Duyvis Tiger Nuts of a different flavour, I figured why not give another one a try. While the flavour was a bit generic, for lack of a better term, the overall experience was positive and I wanted to try some of their other flavours. My understanding is that provencal flavour is quite common over there, and I guess I’m about to find out first hand why that is.

Smells salty and savoury.

Provencal is a certain style of cooking food, and in general is with garlic, onion, mushrooms, tomato, olive oil, and herbs. Visually, there are four distinct coatings to be seen here, white, orange, brown, and a brownish red. While each of them does have a slight distinction in taste, I can’t really pin down what any of them specifically are. I can only speak to what the general flavour is. And by general flavour, I mean what it tastes like to either eat them blindfolded or multiple nuts at a time.

Deep down, they’re all the same. Just like us.

The most distinct flavour the garlic and onion. The have the strongest start, and are the ones that linger the longest. I also taste tomato and what I believe to be rosemary. While I can’t specifically pick out all the flavours, I can tell you there is a lot going on, but none of it really clashes with each other. They all come together really well to make for a very tasty snacking experience, and a great way to ingest peanuts far faster than you would care to admit. Too bad those hips don’t lie.

The texture is great when eaten together, and each coating is slightly different. Some of the brown pieces seem to have a thicker shell, while the white ones appear to have a thinner crisper shell. It could all just be my imagination as well, but overall the nuts have a wonderful balance of crisp, airy shell to contrast the crunchy peanuts held within. Again, these are addictive and before you know it you’ve consumed well above the average serving size for four grown adults in a single sitting.

In terms of overall experience I enjoyed this more than the bacon flavour I tried. Part of it is that this flavour is much more to my liking, and the texture seems to be better too. It could also be that each of the shells was different from the next, so that the mix helps to shake things up and keep it interesting. Either way, I would totally get this flavour again. That says a lot coming from someone who doesn’t like salty peanut snacks.

I’d consider these worth the calories.
