Ghana – Saku Saku Chocolate Balls

Ghana is one of Lotte’s brand names of chocolate. It’s marketed as being simple, high quality chocolate for a decent price. When I think of Ghana I think of their standard bars. Sure they do the occasional seasonal and gimmicky flavours, but the chocolate bars themselves are iconic in East Asia at least. They also do spin off snacks under the same brand, which is where they get a little more creative. Today’s snack is one of those creative ideas.

These are cookie balls that have a chocolate outer shell baked onto them, and within them they also have a chocolate core. It sounds like an interesting idea to say the least. Looking at these reminds me of chocolate cereal that was super popular when I was a kid. Actually, I’m pretty sure they are still popular, but parents are likely less fond of giving it to their kids, knowing what we know now. Crazy to think about a time where companies got away with marketing sugar for breakfast as being healthy. Wild times eh?

Visually these are less like balls and more like square chiclet shapes. They make me think of a fidget toy, if it was made out of some metal and was weighted for spinning or twisting or what have you. The exterior looks like it was dipped in chocolate, and has a roughness to its appearance that indicates it would be crunchy in some way.

Reminds me of cereal for some reason…

The texture is quite soft, and the chocolate on the outside, along with the cookie shell remind me of cereal or a breakfast corn snack. The whole thing comes together like some sort of chocolate covered corn pops, and remind me of a different take on the corn flakes and chocolate combination. It’s got the right amount of crispy, airy crunch to it while also still delivering that rich chocolate texture.

The flavour is fairly standard milk chocolate, and on it’s own is nothing to write home about. The real standout of this is the texture that helps to deliver the flavour quite well. I would love to have tried a darker variety of this, but the flavour is not bad and still a solid one to snack on. The biggest complaint here is there’s not enough.

A decent amount of chocolate filling on the inside too.

Overall an interesting experience if nothing else. It’s not bad, but given the price and what you get for it, seems a bit on the “try once” end of the spectrum and less on the “get this again” end. It’s a good snack but I imagine it’s not easy to make, and the price makes it hard to snack on these without feeling unsatisfied and wanting more.

Seems reasonable for all the chocolate you’ll be consuming.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
