Kit Kat – Strawberry Chocolate Cake

I’ve had a lot of strawberry flavoured chocolates before. I’ve had a decent selection of strawberry flavoured Kit Kats before. In fact, I have a hard time believing that this flavour won’t be just another strawberry flavour. I mean, Kit Kat is already chocolate, so how different could a strawberry chocolate cake flavour be from a strawberry flavour? After a certain point it’s all just marketing, no?

This pouch has 10 mini bars, which is basically the norm for Kit Kat’s at this point in Japan and most of Asia. I can’t actually remember the last time I saw the standard sized bar over there, similar to how we have it in North America. We here in the west still cling to our old tried and true formats of the giant bars, so I don’t see the individually wrapped ones catching on too well.

Is it me or do these get smaller every year?

To give credit where credit is due, this flavour does make me think of a nice strawberry chocolate cake. A lot of that comes down to the chocolate coating – it’s got a chocolate cake quality to it, likely from the rich cocoa flavour it has and the use of a less sweet chocolate. It’s got that same rich flavour you get when having a nice, moist chocolate cake. The strawberry comes through the cream in between the wafers. The strawberry cream is relatively tart and floral which helps balance the sweetness and richness of the chocolate coating.

The tempering is pretty well done.

The texture is Kit Kat’s claim to fame. They have a good balance of chocolate to wafer, to the creme filling inside. It all comes together to deliver a killing blow to your taste buds. One thing I always appreciated about it was the ratios – they seem to have just the right amount of chocolate to wafer to cream ratio. This is no small feat, given that the wafer to cream proportion isn’t easy to get down pat. Add in another variable and you have quite a challenge, but they’ve figured it out over the years and I think it’s as good as it will get.

A familiar and comforting sight.

Here’s the deal – are these good? Sure. Are they unique or novel? Not really. If you can find these on sale or at a decent price compared to more general offerings of Kit Kat, by all means go for it. But don’t go out of your way to get a bag of these, since it’s likely you’ll just be disappointed by how typical they are. It really is mostly marketing, but if you enjoy the flavour profile, it hits all the right notes.

It’s always shocking to think about how many calories are in a tiny wrapper.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
