Meiji – Almond Matcha
I haven’t had Meiji chocolate products too much beyond the classic chocolate covered gummies. Maybe something about the packaging on the nuts felt too dated or old school that it never caught my eye. But they will go ignored no longer, today we finally try one. Some may think its odd I didn’t go for the classic flavours like dark or milk chocolate, but I see the matcha and the green and I can’t help but grab it.
The previous Meiji products I’ve had usually come in a foil pack, so colour me surprised when I slide the cardboard out and it has this fancy corrugated cardboard covering the almonds just sitting loose in the box. I guess now it makes sense why the whole thing was sealed in plastic wrap. I will admit this definitely feels fancier than the foil pouch. i also feel like this won’t keep it’s freshness very well, despite how fancy it looks and feels. Not that these will be sticking around for any prolonged period of time.

The chocolate is thick, and thankfully it’s pretty decent matcha chocolate. The almond itself is ok, nothing bad but also nothing great. It has a tendency to leave behind a bit more grit than what I am used to, so maybe it’s a different breed of almond or maybe different quality. Either way, if the almond was a bit snappier and had a clean finish I think this would be a strong contender. It could also be an element of freshness, which is always a concern with mass market chocolate nuts like this.

The flavour is on the sweeter side as far as matcha goes, but it still has that rich, earthy and slightly bitter matcha that I know and love. The chocolate on it’s own is nice and perfectly snackable, but something about adding in an almond in the middle makes it very easy to binge and makes it addictive. The almond adds a bit of a toasty nut flavour, but most of the flavour is carried by the chocolate here. Which I guess its technically the matcha flavour.
My only complaint here is that there’s not that many in the box. Or maybe it just feels that way because of how quickly I finished them. I do usually say quality over quantity, so I have no one to blame but myself here. But the real question everyone wants the answer to is, would I do it again?
