Poptastic – Spicy Canadian Cheddah Popcorn

I was browsing my usual snack sections when I came across this new brand. At least, I think it’s new since I haven’t really noticed it up until now. I’m always a fan of supporting local brands and trying out new things, so what better way then to dive into something relatively foolproof like packaged popcorn?

As it turns out, this is indeed a relatively new brand, and are from the same creative minds that created Hardbite. Long time readers will know I gush about Hardbite, so already I am feeling my judgement being clouded by this newfound information. Popcorn and one of my favourite potato chip brands coming together in one bag? Yes please.

My nose hairs are tingling.

This brand seems to go a bit premium and high brow, with it’s non-GMO corn and it’s avocado oil. I’ve noticed a few other brands also jump on this bandwagon, so I don’t know if it makes any difference in taste, or it’s an attempt to make it seem healthier in some way. And we all know how I feel about that. I just want to know how it tastes.

The flavour is somewhat mild at first, but very quickly I am hit with the heat which seems to be jalapeno. The heat is stronger than I was expecting, and it lingers for a while. The savoury notes come in shortly after and the combination of cheese and the jalapeno yet again prove why it’s a time tested flavour. Nothing too revolutionary, but a classic done right. I approve.

The seasoning looks well and evenly distributed.

The texture of the kernels is pretty typical as far as packaged popcorn goes. It’s got somewhat smaller kernels but have a less puffy ball like texture and more of a condensed little air ball. It reminds me more of the slightly styrofoamy texture of classic popcorn I grew up with. It’s pretty much what you expect from microwave or packaged popcorn, no more no less. It just leaves you wanting more after each bite. To me that’s the mark of a good popcorn.

So what’s the verdict? Well they are good no doubt. Are they worth getting again? Also yes, with a caveat – these are pricey if you don’t wait for a sale, so while I do enjoy these I would still wait for a sale before getting them. Though maybe that’s not a fair comparison since I do that with a lot of snacks…

I can confirm avocado oil works well for popcorn as well as potato chips.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
