Pretz – 16 Grain Light Salt

The overall format of Pretz remains rather unchanged for decades. It was only in the past few years I’ve seen them branch out into different texture formats, and most of the novelty and new things being flavours. It’s tempting to fall into that rut of believing that if something ain’t broke, there’s no need to fix it. But it’s good they’ve decided to try something different, because I certainly am ready for it.

This interesting take on Pretz has 16 grains going into it, so they really want to make sure you are getting some fibre in there. Apparently there’s a few flavours, but this one is the basic lightly salted one. There’s 6 pouches, and each has a decent number of standard sized sticks to them.

These pouches are definitely smaller and shorter.

The stick has the appearance of those wheat crackers, and for the most part have the nice, crisp snap that you expect from a normal Pretz. Unlike the normal Pretz though, these feel more solid and had a distinct grainy finish and crunch to it. Anyone who has had wheat based crackers will understand what I’m referring to. It’s something that’s noticeable for long time fans, but someone who hasn’t had extensive Pretz experience may not realize it. It’s definitely unique.

Can you see the grains?

The flavour of these is a distinct salty seafood like flavour. It’s not quite seaweed but seaweed adjacent, and I can’t quite put my finger on it. It’s very savoury though, and very tasty, and compliments the otherwise plain flavour of the sticks. The grains do come through, and you can tell this isn’t your garden variety Pretz. It tastes healthier, for lack of a better term and has a seed or grain quality to it.

How many grains can you spot?

Overall I wouldn’t necessarily be one of the people that buys into the theory that this is supposed to be healthy, but I don’t doubt that it’s at least slightly better than the typical version that’s just enriched wheat flour. At least this one has a bit of fiber in it. I would say if you like the texture of wheat snacks, this will appeal to you regardless of purported health benefits. If not, you may not enjoy this as much as the classic format, but I think it’s still worth of a try. I personally enjoy these and would consider getting them again, just as a normal snack that’s part of the ever growing rotation.

So many different flours…

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
