Riceworks – Avocado Ranch

I was around when rice chips were just starting to be introduced in their current, crunchy, hard triangle form. From the first time I’ve had it up until now, I’ve yet to be disappointed and I have a very fond memory tied to them. Something about the rice flour makes them harder, crunchier and thicker than the usual potato or corn chip. It really speaks to my inner rice bucket.

It’s largely texture that I enjoy, but they keep cranking out interesting flavours so I keep trying them. Avocado ranch is a somewhat new combination in general for me, but I imagine on paper it seems like it would work. Avocado is smooth and mostly texture, and ranch is a strong flavour but could be enhanced by the creaminess from the avocado. I’m interested to see how this goes.

Something something something, sharp objects, something something.

Let’s get texture out of the way first – I love how hearty and substantial the crunch on these feel. You can also see that these chips are quite thick, and I’d wager that these make for better dip delivery devices than most popular tortilla chips. Probably the best way to describe these to someone who hasn’t had them before is that they are like a very thick, corn tortilla chip. What they lack in crisp or airy texture, they make up for in crunch In some of the chips you can visually see little pieces of crisped brown rice and that adds to the texture of the chip.

Be careful or the roof of your mouth will hate you.

The flavour is somewhat familiar but at the same time somewhat hard to pinpoint what it reminds me of. The flavour is indeed zesty, and has a smooth ranch flavour. Most flavours I’ve had have a strong, sharp flavour to it but this one has a more rounded flavour that has a more smooth quality to it. Whether it’s the spices used or the avocado, the ranch keeps it’s distinct flavour while not being overpowering and just being more easy on the palate. Another point for it being great as a dip vector.

Admittedly these may not be for everyone, as I mentioned these are the opposite of crisp and airy. But if you are like me and like a nice thick chip and a substantial crunch, you can’t go wrong with these. Especially with the flavour, this one is a clear winner. Now if you’ll excuse me, I feel a little gross after finishing the whole bag in one sitting…

They hit your hips just as hard as normal chips.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
