Ritter Sport – Funky White Lemon

Another flavour in the line of seasonal summer flavours, it was mostly the flavour that caught my attention, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t also get sucked in by the bright, retro-feeling theme. There

Something of note here is that the bar is comprised of 9 squares instead of the typical 16. The other time I’ve seen this done was with the mousse flavour, so I assume it ha something to do with the optimal ratio of chocolate to filling, and 9 pieces gives it enough space to really let the mousse shine through.

Can you tell these are big boys?

The outer layer is white chocolate, so as you can imagine it’s quite sweet. It is however flavoured with what reminds of limoncello, so it’s got a nice citrus zest to it. It works quite well accompanied by the citrus, lemon mousse on the inside. I say mousse but it’s not quite exactly the same as previous flavours with the same filling. But more on the texture later. The lemon flavour has a nice kick to it, but not enough that it leaves the mouth feeling off, like when you have something with too much lemon oil or peel in it. I can see this bar having wide appeal with it’s nice balanced flavour.

While the mousse isn’t exactly melt in your mouth and overly soft or anything like that, it’s still noticeably soft enough that it doesn’t put up much resistance. It has a consistency slightly more solid than the cream or caramel fillings, and is like a slightly more solid yogurt filling. I wouldn’t quite say it’s the mousse I was expecting, but it has a soft enough mouthfeel to contrast the outer shell and feel like a filled piece instead of a solid block.

Surprisingly the inside is lighter in colour.

Probably the most striking thing, apart from the size of the bar, is how refreshing it is. Make no mistake, this is sweet and quite unabashedly so, but I still find this quite enjoyable somehow. Something about the flavour profile reminds me of something enjoyable I can’t quite put my finger on. Something about strong, sweet lemon flavours does seem nostalgic and brings back memories of times long past.

While these are admittedly on the sweeter side, the flavour is very appealing to the palate, and has a refreshing quality to it. Even though it’s not something I generally associate with summer, I could see why the flavour works as a summer seasonal one, and I would definitely consider getting this one again.

Normally it takes 6 pieces to hit 260 calories…

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
