Ritter Sport – Groovy Crunchy Pretzel
Summer may not necessarily be something many people associate with a great time for chocolate. It’s usually very heat sensitive, and summer is when things are generally the hottest time of the year. Chocolate also doesn’t have any cooling or refreshing properties normally, so unlike ice cream it’s not something people crave when it gets sweltering outside.
Having said that, it is a great time to bring in summer themed products, and chocolate is no exception. After all, when else would you bring in bring colourful or crazy, vibrant flavours? I mean technically any season is good for that, but let’s just go with the flow.
Groovy is not a word I hear being used well…ever. The word definitely evokes images of what the 60s and 70s were like, but I guess that somewhat works in the context of the colourful packaging. Still, it feels like one of those words that’s a little strange to hear. Maybe it will be back in vogue, after all many things are similar to fashion where it falls in and out of favour at seemingly random times and ways.

To my surprise, this isn’t just pretzels and milk chocolate – there was also some bits of the signature corn flakes that Ritter is known for. What you end up with is a crunch that works on multiple layers. While the straight chocolate and pretzel combo really only has one or two bites worth of crunch, the extra corn flakes add a third or forth, and that is what sets this bar apart. Normally the corn flakes on it’s own is a real winner as far as Ritter Sport flavours go, but add in some nice pretzel pieces and a little bit of salt to bring in some extra texture is a great idea, and the execution is well done.

The flavour is mostly milk chocolate sweetness, but there’s a few pretzel bits with a little bit of salt to help balance it out. The corn flakes here also add some sweetness to unbalance things, so overall its a sweet bar. Sweet but still tasty. I suspect this would come down to preference ultimately, but I feel like they could increase the cocoa % on these and make it ever so slightly darker so that it isn’t as sweet. Then again, it could be to draw in a younger crowd, if they packaging is anything to go by.
