Ritter Sport – Milk Chocolate with Coconut Filling

I don’t have anything personal against coconuts, I just don’t typically find myself opining for them. Be in coconut milk, coconut water, coconut oil or coconut flakes, it just generally doesn’t draw me in. That being said I love flavourful curries that use coconut milk, so there’s that. It’s just not a selling point for me in the same way something like hazelnuts or grape flavoured products would be.

But like many other things, I have a fierce loyalty to the nameless brands that I frequent, so for better or worse I’m giving this a try for the purpose of research and scientific rigor. I’m going into this with an open mind, but I am hoping it doesn’t end up like a Mounds situation. Clearly there is a market for that chocolate bar, but it definitely ain’t for me. Apparently not for any of my friends either since growing up, I rarely saw anyone eat them or even pick them in a candy bowl during Halloween. The leftover chocolate, as we thought of it.

Such pleasing, uniform shapes.

The milk chocolate is indeed on the sweeter side, but sadly I was not aware of a coconut filling paired with a darker chocolate. The coconut filling is very distinct in coconut flavour, and has a very pleasant, sweet coconut milk flavour to it. Somehow the sweetness of the coconut filling is a different kind of sweet, and it pairs surprisingly well with the sweetness of the milk chocolate. Something about it is smooth and has an almost silky quality to it. It’s an interesting contrast to the sweet, somewhat rich flavour of the chocolate.

Doesn’t look too different from the yogurt flavours.

The coconut filling is very soft, and it is only a few degrees away from simply melting in the mouth. The texture of the coconut filling is very smooth and reminds me of their yogurt flavours. The coconut flakes add to the authenticity of the experience, and make me feel like I’m eating a coconut candy of some sort. Thankfully though, the flakes are used moderately and not over saturated. The flakes add a unique texture, but too many and it just feels like your mouth is being assaulted by hard-to-chew confetti.

I can’t be 100% sure if a darker chocolate would work with this filling, but I’d love to see it and try it for myself. The milk chocolate is on the sweeter side, but overall the flavour works really well with the coconut and I’m slightly dumbfounded how much I enjoyed it. I am not a big fan of coconut anything, but this one I would consider getting again.

That calorie hit though…

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
