Ritter Sport – Sweet ‘N Salty Duo Caramel Crush & Big Brownie
Ritter Sport doing the new product called Duo is where they take two flavours and smash it into one bar. But not just a small bar, but a big one. These are big hefty bars, and I’m all for it. The size of these makes it good value compared to the normal bar.
This is a giant, 6 x 6 bar, with half the bar being one flavour and the second being the other half. That leaves you with 18 squares of each flavour, which is already more than the standard 16. Not only do I love value, I love novelty. Both the flavours appeal to me enough that I could see myself getting each of them separately, so getting both in the same bar for cheaper is just gravy all around.

The caramel crush flavour is the combination of caramel cream and bits of salty shortbread, as they refer to it. This flavour reminds me of the classic biscuit in chocolate flavour, but the biscuit is mixed into the cream, along with a healthy dose of salt and caramel too. The overall flavour is on the sweeter side, but it is also being balanced out by some big salt energy. I sometimes wonder how I can go back to caramel on it’s own, given that the salt makes it feel less intensely sweet. The texture is quite soft and melty in the centre, and has enough bits and pieces of crunch to shake things up so that it’s not a smooth, leave in your mouth type of flavour.

The big brownie portion of the bar is pretty spot on – it is filled with a dense, rich cocoa powder flavour, and also has bits of brownie that remind me of that top or crust you get when you bite into one. Once the milk chocolate layer starts melting away, which it does quite quickly, you’re left with a mouthfeel similar to an actual brownie, which I can appreciate.

While the two flavours on their own are quite solid and I enjoy, the contrast between the two actually works quite well. One is more of a light and sweet affair with it’s caramel and crispy shortbread bits, while the brownie is heavier, rich and more satisfying. An interesting combination and certainly seems more well thought out.
There’s very few Ritter Sport flavours I don’t enjoy, and this is no different. I would do this one again in a heartbeat, whether it’s together or split apart. I would get this again in a heartbeat.
