Ritter Sport – Vegan Sesame

Have you ever had sesame snaps? That’s the first thing I think of when I think of sesame and any candy or sweet that is based heavily around sesame. For anyone who hasn’t had sesame in any meaningful quantity, the flavour is distinct, and yet mild at the same time. It’s generally got a nutty flavour to it, and if it’s been toasted it has a stronger notes of that nutty flavour. It’s generally quite balanced, and can be used in sweet or salty foods.

Visually it’s hard to tell that these are vegan. If I had to nitpick anything, it would probably be that these don’t seem as melty and look and appear more brittle and more shiny, for lack of a better term. That alone isn’t much to go off though, since a well tempered darker chocolate is somewhat similar. It also smells like a normal bar, so not much indication from aroma either.

You’d never know…

These are packed with sesame. They were definitely generous with how much they packed into each bar. It’s important to note that these seeds have a caramel coating to them, similar to what you would find in a sesame snap to help them stick together and add a bit of sweetness to them. It actually works quite well with the chocolate that is going for a higher cocoa content. What you end up with is something that essentially tastes like a sesame snap covered in chocolate. It’s not as snappy or hard as an actual sesame snap, but it capture a lot of that essence which I appreciate. The crunch of the seeds contrasting against the smooth chocolate as it melts in your mouth is a very pleasant experience and makes me wonder why this isn’t more common of a thing. I guess the sesame seeds getting everywhere inside your mouth can be a deterrent for some.

So much sesame. It’s a little overwhelming.

As I’ve mentioned in my other vegan bar reviews, these are surprisingly tasty for not having any dairy at all, and odds are you may totally miss that these are vegan unless you have a really keen palate. The flavour of the candied sesame seeds is most prevalent here, and the chocolate is definitely taking a back seat, but not in a bad way. the nutty sweetness of the bar compliment the cocoa flavour very well, as the timeless combination of nutty and chocolatey come together for yet another ensemble.

Shockingly, I love these as well. The vegan line is yet again, a swing and a home run. Every single flavour I’ve had is a hit, and this is no exception. Here’s to hoping that others feel the same way and this makes a big enough splash to stay around. I may not be a vegan, but I know tasty chocolate when I try it.

Vegan or not, calories are about the same.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
