Takis – Dragon Sweet Chili

Sweet chili flavours are a bit hit or miss for me. Some are too much on the sweet side, some too much on the chili side. As you may well know, I am an avid spice wimp and while I will power through to try spicy snacks, I don’t tend to enjoy them very much. This usually works out when tasting most mass market chips though, since they want a wide audience and they tend to over hype the spice.

Takis isn’t one of those brands though, they don’t mess around with their spice and the spice level is decently strong for a lot of their more popular flavours like Fuego. Despite that, I keep coming back because of the interesting chip texture. And you know ya boy loves them crunchy chips.

They smell of sugar.

These are spicy and hot enough to give me pause. The flavour is slightly sweet, but mostly burning. Takis tend to be hit or miss between bags when it comes to seasoning, but I feel like this is just as, if not more spicy than the signature Fuego flavour. I can realistically only have one or two pieces before I take a pause or I start sweating or feeling pain. This spice hits the tongue pretty hard, so it’s not something I can handle too well. Excuse me while I dig deep into the tissue paper box. Heat aside, the flavour is mostly sweet, and not much else. While I’m not a huge fan of burning, it almost feels like the burn is just there for the sake of it, and doesn’t seem to add much flavour. Or maybe I just haven’t reached a tolerance level where I can taste past it, but if there is a flavour to it I can’t seem to find it. Lost in the sauce, so to speak.

I poured out a few too many this time.

Texture is delightful and if you like crunch like me, a rolled tortilla chip is the way to maximize crunch. The tortilla itself seems to be on the thinner side, but when you roll it up it gets layered on top of each other and the resulting crunch is light on each layer but they add up quite quickly to deliver a satisfying experience.

I’ve always been fond of Takis because it’s a relatively unique style of chip and not too many brands have gotten into the rolled tortilla market just yet. Fingers crossed that changes though, as I see it as a winning formula. The only issue I have with this particular bag is the flavour itself. While I enjoy the chip, I would prefer to go with another flavour. Mileage may vary though since I’m sure this caters more to spice fiends.

One of the few times I may do less than the serving suggestion.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
