Takis – Kaboom
Takis are one of my favourite snacks because I love the texture of tortilla chips. The only thing I love more than a tortilla chip is a rolled tortilla chip. Something about having it fold in on itself adds layers to the crunch and the mouth feel. It also makes them much easier to eat as you can pick them up as a stick and shove it in your mouth like a straw, instead of trying to bite off a corner or fit a triangle into your mouth. It’s simple geometry folks.
One issue I have with Takis however, is the inconsistency in seasoning. Some bags will be overly seasoned, and others will feel like they missed the nozzle when the seasoning was spraying everything down. It’s a similar feeling to when you try brushing your teeth and the whole glob of paste falls off leaving a tiny bit for you to brush with. Or when you wash your hands and the soap slides off your hand before you can even lather. It’s not the end of the world, but it is very frustrating.
I can’t tell if that’s the issue here today, because these look very red. I don’t know if it’s supposed to be this red usually, but it’s red enough I assume it’s angry at me and it’s supposed to be this way.

The flavour is a combination of ketchup and spicy heat. I want to taste the sriracha but I mostly just get the heat from it, and the flavour of the ketchup. The flavour is ultimately spicy ketchup, which is all the rage these days. It’s not hard to see why though – ketchup has a nice sweet savoury profile to it, and the extra spice helps add some more complexity to the flavour. The heat is more noticeable here than a lot of brands, and it’s just hovering on the border between nice little heat and too hot to handle. With some spicy snacks they give me pause because the heat build up is fast and hard, but this one seems to straddle that line very well. It does get hot but not enough to slow me down. I’d say this is a little milder than Fuego. The interesting thing about this spice is it sits heavy on the tongue, so be warned.

The beauty of rolled tortilla chips is that they have the nice crunch of tortilla chips, but doubled, and even tripled since it’s rolled in on itself. I want to say that it’s one of my favourite ways to experience tortilla chips, since I love a nice, thick, hearty crunch. These are still crispy, but have that multi-layered crunch that honestly can be hit or miss for some people. You just have to know what you’re getting into.
