Tirol Chocolate – Chocolate Mochi
Continuing the trend of reviews for Christmas week, I have another Tirol chocolate review. This one is more seasonably appropriate. This one is another flavour of their mochi line, with that adorable little mochi mascot who may or may not be suggestive, as a coworker so kindly reminded me. While the packaging may indicate it is a seasonal flavour, I have seen this one around so I’m not sure if it was specific to a season. This one is supposed to be dark chocolate shell covering a mochi centre, with some chocolate syrup in the middle for added flavour.
Even from opening the bag, I can tell by the smell this is going to be a dark chocolate, which I love. I find milk chocolate to be too sweet most times, especially when other things are going on that are also sweet. I have high hopes that the dark chocolate nature of this will help even things out and give it a nice balance, rather than overt sweetness. Also, I love the packaging.

As you can probably tell, I had a similar issue with the Yogurt Mochi flavour I reviewed yesterday. This is because they came as part of the same shipment, and due to unforeseen circumstances everything is all melty and weird looking. Thankfully I am not that easily scared and I will push forth.
I would liken this to a saucy wench, lots of syrup going on in the middle and got enough richness to keep you wanting to come back, despite it being clearly bad for you. Such decadence…I love it. I’m not sure I could finish too many in one sitting without feeling stuffed though, since it feels very heavy for some reason. Maybe it’s just how I associate that bitterness of dark chocolate. The texture is typical of what you’d expect from a gummy or mochi covered in chocolate. The only difference here is the syrup adds some moisture to it so you aren’t really left feeling that it’s dry at any point. The sauce appears to be a dark chocolate syrup as well, adding to the overall balanced flavour, and works out quite well. You’d think that most of the syrup would have leaked out from the bullet wound, but it seems to have mostly kept itself together and most of it was still inside to greet my mouth.
Given it’s limited and seasonal, I don’t know if you will have luck finding it. If you do, give it a try if you want some dark chocolate with a nice chew. I would certainly do this again. Because they use 88% dark chocolate, it might be a tad bitter for some. Personally though, I felt the whole thing came together much closer to a semi-sweet 60 – 65% chocolate, or what I consider to be snack-able dark chocolate.
I just want to take a moment to yet again, appreciate how festive and adorable the art style on this packaging is. For those unfamiliar, mochi is often made by hand by beating the “dough” in a cylindrical wooden bucket. The back of the package has the mascot in said bucket with the barcode on the outside. An adorable little detail that I really love.
