Tirol Chocolate – Macaron
Macarons are something I see often, visually drawn to, but rarely end up buying. My issue with macarons is more of a me issue rather than with the dessert itself. As someone who doesn’t enjoy hot beverages like tea or coffee, it’s hard for me to justify certain desserts that thrive on them, like macarons. It’s because of that, when I do have them I find them to be sweet and it’s something that seems unavoidable, given what they are.
Having said that, I generally won’t say no if you offered me one, but I just don’t find them to be worth the price tag for me personally. But put them in a cheap convenience store chocolate format, and sign me up! I got this more to see what Tirol would do more than wanting to get a macaron in the form of a chocolate.

This is overall quite an interesting flavour – it is largely a pistachio flavour with a mild, nutty taste. There’s a little thing of strawberry jelly, as well as marshmallows. The strawberry jelly is fairly mild, and the marshmallows only add a very slight airy quality to the experience. While overall each component is somewhat mild and not too strong in flavour, there is ultimately an underlying sweetness that is no unlike an actual macaron, so maybe having this with a tea is the right play.

The texture is also quite a thing to behold – the whole thing is a near solid block of chocolate but there’s marshmallows in the center accompanied by a light touch of strawberry jelly. Truthfully the marshmallow and jelly don’t do too much from a texture perspective, but it’s a nice touch and I give them points for trying. It certainly doesn’t steal the show but it prevents it from being just a solid block or clump of chocolate and adds some much appreciated variety to the texture.

Truthfully it doesn’t really remind me of a macaron, mostly because the ones I’ve had are generally on the sweeter side and are meant to be accompanied by a coffee or tea, but I appreciate what they set out to do here. I do think the pistachio flavour overall gave it a nice mild feel to it and isn’t too heavy. I wouldn’t mind doing these again, but I certainly wouldn’t be going for it if I was expecting a macaron. Maybe something more along the lines of an interesting sweet treat that also has a nice palate feel and is mild.
