Bourbon – Gummy Mozza – Yogurt

Sometimes I wonder why the Japanese snack makers seem to be so much more creative and willing to take risks on strange, novel candy ideas. Is it just a matter of consumers more willing to try novel, fun or cute ideas? Or are we here in the west just stuck in our old ways and want to stick to our go to choices despite our vocal protests? I’ll never really understand all the factors that go into. What I can say is I appreciate all the weird ideas that come out of Japan, and that eventually if you throw enough weird ideas at a wall, one of them will stick. Whether today’s snack will stick or not remains to be seen, but I am ever hopeful.

The product line derives it’s name from the concept of being a gummy that has the texture of fresh mozzarella. Certainly an interesting concept, to say the least. I’m actually thinking of cheese gummies and it doesn’t seem like that crazy (or bad) of an idea now that I try to imagine it. Fresh mozzarella has a very soft bouncy texture to it, so it would be great if they could find some way to capture that in a gummy, thought I remain skeptical.

The outside looks nice and fluffy.

The texture is really fun to play with. Like a soft, squishy marshmallow. Unlike a marshmallow though, these bounce back to their original shape pretty quickly. They’re so soft and pillowy, I almost don’t want to eat it. Unsurprisingly they have a similar mouthfeel too, it’s like a marshmallow but it’s ever so slightly gummy – instead of simply melting in your mouth like a marshmallow would, these have a bit of chew to them. While it’s not a lot, it’s enough to be considered a gummy. I don’t know that I’d consider these like fresh mozzarella, but I can see what they were going for. Kind of like how when you eat string cheese and it has that bounciness to it, this reminds me of that. Unfortunately it doesn’t stretch the same way as a string cheese, but it is still slightly pliable. Also similar to a marshmallow, if you leave this in your mouth, they sort of dissolve, if you’re into that. But these are way more fun to chew on. Like eating a cloud that’s slightly chewy and stale. It tastes better than that sounds, trust me.

The inside looks…the same.

The flavour is real strong, and if you like Calpis, Milkis, Yakult or any other variation of the yogurt drinks, you’ll love these. It has a powerful yogurt tangy sweetness to it that I really enjoy – the flavour permeates the entire piece from start to finish delivering a punch up until the end. It finishes fairly clean and doesn’t leave much after taste, so I found myself popping these one after another.

These are definitely a departure from my usual preference of firm, stiff, dense gummies, but they are a welcome experience. As far as gummies go, these are probably the closest I’ve come to chewing on a foamy, cloud like gummy and enjoyed it, so for that reason I would recommend these. Also they’re super fun to play with, if you’re into that sort of thing.

A nice, fairly low calorie snack.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
