Chocoball – Kyoto Matcha

Chocoball is generally considered more of a children’s brand, and is obviously marketed as so. As the children who grew up on it, they become nostalgic and become a bigger portion of the purchasing base. I think the best example of this is LEGO, where once it was almost geared specifically towards kids, it has become increasingly targeted at adults who have more money. I imagine this particular flavour of Chocoball is similar to that.

Unlike some of the other large premium versions of Chocoball, these are less round and more oblong. Almost like a flat sphere like shape similar to a Skittle. It makes sense when you consider that these are not gummy or jelly based, and are just larger version of the usual chocolate covered biscuit format.

So shiny…

They have a very deep, rich, earthy green to the outer chocolate and have any equally enticing smell to them. The flavour of the matcha is a very nice balance between the earthy bitter notes, with a decent sweetness. This is more of a distinct matcha flavour, and less like the more common cookies and creme flavour of overly sweet matcha, not that I dislike either one. But these definitely feel like they are more geared towards a mature and adult audience, versus children of their regular varieties. If nothing else, these aren’t just straight sweetness.

A pretty big biscuit in there.

The chocolate coating is quite thick and has a decent helping of chocolate before getting to the crispy, light and airy center. The chocolate itself is pretty well tempered but also has a nice melt to it, so as you’re chomping away the chocolate slowly dissolves away instead of clumping together or leaving a mess. Overall the combination of the smooth chocolate and the airy biscuit texture leaves a rich flavour behind, but a clean finish. It’s like a premium version of a Maltesers or Whopper, if you have tried those. All in all a great combo working to make something quite addictive.

There’s nothing super revolutionary or novel about this, it’s just a relatively classic combo done very well. I’m slightly ashamed to say I finished the whole pouch in a sitting, but if you tried these you would probably as well. Another highly recommended product from the Chocoball product line. I do think this is better for adults though, since these balls are big enough to be a choking hazard for any unsuspecting kids.

Turns out size does matter. Whodathunk?

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
