Haribo – Merry Mix

Christmas has passed, but the nostalgia and the heartburn has not. So what better time to indulge in more treats that are seasonally late? Or very, very early depending on how you perceive time. There’s a lot of different things going on here – there’s the jelly baby looking candies, there’s the foamy gift boxes and there’s the foamy christmas trees.

Starting with the gingerbread looking fellows – the texture is very much similar to a jelly baby, where the outside is somewhat hard but turns soft jelly in the middle very quickly. It seems like green is apple, red is strawberry, orange is orange, and purple is blackcurrant.

There’s also a snowman piece here all by his lonesome, and this one just tastes like a marshmallow – it’s basically just sugary foamy goodness. Nothing too remarkable about this one.

The gifts come in three colours, and to be honest with you I can’t tell what any of them are. It could be the sweetness from the foam hiding it, but for all I can tell the green and red are just sweet flavours, and the purple one is slightly tart. The texture is great though, and reminds me of those delightful foamy alligators, though these are somehow even softer.

The trees are a similar situation, where they are very soft, have non-descript flavours, and have a vaguely christmas themed flavours. I swear I could taste ginger in one of them…honestly the flavours are all sort of hobbled together and I’m not sure what’s what with this particular piece. What I can tell you is that it’s mostly sweet, fairly soft, and quite adorable to look at.

The overall mix is on the sweeter side, and this is probably pure preference, but I find there’s too much emphasis on non-fruit flavours. I find fruit assortments go over better and translate into gummies better. These are not bad but perhaps more for the younger ones who just want an influx of sugar. Compounding this fact is the overwhelming urge I get to put multiple of these small shapes into my mouth at once. I somehow feel like that is by design, and they are meant to be eaten in a handful rather than individually. How else do you explain the small size and the lack of distinct flavour?

As far as seasonal flavours go, this one has enough novelty and gimmick for the kids, and maybe adults. But on a pure taste perspective, this one is a little too gimmicky and not solid enough that I would get this again. This would be great to keep kids distracted for a bit though, with the pretty colours and shapes. Just be sure you’re prepared for the aftermath.

All these added flavours and it still just tastes like sugar.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
