Haribo – The Smurfs Sour

One of the many frustrating things about living in the Frigid North is that we are oh so close to the US where they get all the interesting, unique flavours, and we typically get none of it. There’s probably a lot of political and economic reasons we can get into about it, but to keep it simple, if I want in on those snacks I have to bend over backwards or pay exorbitant fees for them. Sometimes A man can only take so much before he snaps and pays a hefty fee to get that product. This is one of them.

Low and behold, these are just like the original Smurfs, but with sour coating on them. The original pack was mostly just colourful shapes but only having two flavours. Thankfully the two flavours are good and so I figured this would be a safe choice too.

The flavour is identical to the normal Smurfs – raspberry and strawberry done quite well. I guess when you think about blue coloured snacks, you think of raspberry anyways so we’re already halfway there. Haribo has historically done strawberry and raspberry quite well, and it has a very vibrant, strong floral yet sweet and slightly tart flavour that makes it very hard to stop at just one or two pieces. These are good and have the same classic flavour formula that made the Gold Bears famous. If like me you aren’t a huge fan of citrus, this would be a good bag just for the berry greatness that exists in this bag.

Hard to see their faces beneath all that powder.

Texture is not too different – I’d say it’s about the same level of chewiness, but something about the sour coating makes it more enjoyable to bite into. Something about the coating takes away from the normally greasy or glossy sheen that pieces have on the outside. With the sour coating it’s just matte and it seems to have a bit of an impact on it’s texture, though not too noticeable. Ultimately though, if you’re getting Haribo, you are paying for the texture and this firmly delivers on it (pun intended). These are tough to chew, but true fans love that about Haribo.

The classic bite of Haribo.

I’ll be honest and say I don’t remember much about the Smurfs. That means this bag of candy is being rated by me purely on the flavours. Strawberry and raspberry are undoubtedly popular, and enough so that casual fans of Haribo can enjoy this too if they don’t mind the ever present blue. I imagine fans of the Smurfs would enjoy this even more, as the candy stands on it’s own and having fun shapes is just gravy.

The licensing must not be very expensive.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
