Haribo – Tropifrutti

While I love Haribo for it’s firm, unforgiving gummies, they do a lot of other varieties and flavours of candy that aren’t nearly as strenuous on the jaws. It’s important I find, to try as much of it as I can, so that I may more objectively make the statement that their sour classic firmness gummies are best. It lends more credence to my opinion if I can say I’ve tried it all.

This particular bag here is a tropical variety. It’s not quite the usual gummies, and these seem to be more like a fruit jelly, based on the appearance and the prompts on the packaging. Flavours here include watermelon, banana, passion fruit, pomegranate, mango tangerine and pineapple. They also come in tropical themed shapes, my favourite being the toucan.

These pieces are all very visually pleasing.

Watermelon is very sweet, and has a distinct watermelon rind quality to it. Like you’re biting into the pink part that’s part earthy rind and part sweet red flesh. The banana tastes like a slightly more natural version of the classic flavour of banana cough syrup. It’s not bad, but nothing special. The purple one is passion fruit, and is pretty spot on from what you expect of it. It’s got a very floral and sweet flavour to it and once you try it there’s no question as to what flavour it is. Next up is mango tangerine, and this one is a bit of a weird one for me. I taste the tangerine but it sort of clashes with the mango, which historically is not the best flavour to try and capture in gummy form. The two come together about part way, but falls apart when the mango tries to take the wheel. It ends up tasting quite artificial, and is probably my least favourite one. Pomegranate is not a common flavour, but I appreciate when it makes an appearance. This one is no different and it does a good job of recreating that flavour. It’s got hints of sweet, tart and floral but in a good balance. Last up is the classic pineapple, and lo and behold this one is a banger. Pineapple is not a difficult flavour to replicate, and just like the clear gold bears, this flavour is a clear winner.

That being said, it all comes together to definitely give that tropical feel that most flavour mixes have.

Soft center indeed.

The texture of these is different from what I’m used to from Haribo – these aren’t super rubbery or firm or tough to chew through. Quite the opposite in fact. The packaging says it’s got a fruity taste, and a soft centre. These remind me of a fruit jelly, where the outside has a firm, almost firm wax like texture to the touch, but you press down or bite into it and it very quickly gives way to the soft, slightly chewy jelly center. It makes for a very interesting texture when it all comes together.

As is tradition around these parts, the flavours in order of rank is as follows:

  1. Pineapple
  2. Pomegranate
  3. Passion fruit
  4. Banana
  5. Watermelon
  6. Mango Tangerine

Well, it looks like the P’s take this one. Tropical mixes aren’t usually my jam, but I’m glad I at least gave this a try. I’d say about half of them are enjoyable for me, while the other half is sort of a mixed bag.

These definitely bring me to a happier place.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
