Katjes – Peace & Love Gummies

While Katjes is not exactly what I look for or come to top of mind when I want gummies, something about them keeps me coming back. They have some very interesting offerings that I don’t see too often so I find myself coming back to try more. They occupy a space in my heart that’s somewhere between must try every time and maybe next time. They keep me interested enough to come back but not enough that I would instantly buy their product every time. A good spot, all things considered.

As with all the other Katjes products I’ve had so far, these are vegan gummies. What’s interesting about these, other than the unique branding, is that these are multicoloured and each piece has a different, tie dye appearance going on. I’m not sure if that applies to the flavours as well, but it’s supposed to have a mix of blackcurrant, peach, cherry, strawberry and pear flavours.

Rarely, and I mean rarely, is pear ever a flavour in candy on it’s own. By that I mean, a lot of snacks use pear juice as a flavouring but rarely do they indicate that something is supposed to be pear flavoured. That leads me to believe this is essentially a fruit punch situation where each piece is the same flavour and the only difference is the colour. As humans are very much visual eaters, the colour may lead us to believe we are consuming different flavours when it might all taste the same.

I’m really loving these rad shapes.

The colour and shape of all of these is definitely unique, and they don’t seem to follow any real rhyme or reason. As far as the flavour goes, it does sort of remind me of fruit punch flavoured snacks I had as a kid. I can taste notes of peach, strawberry and pear as well as cherry, but blackcurrant not as much. I can’t tell if my brain is playing tricks on me, but I almost feel like there’s actually a difference in the flavours between some pieces. What I can say is the mish mash of flavours somehow works, and I find myself enjoying it more than I expected. The flavours aren’t nearly as vibrant or strong as some other gummies, but it also doesn’t taste overly artificial or fake, so I can appreciate that.

What fun colour combinations.

The texture is quite soft, not at all sticky and reminds me of a fruit snack from my childhood. While I do tend to prefer chewy, bouncier textures with my gummies, if I treat these as a fruit snack, these are absolutely delectable. They really do bring me back to a younger era of my life where I was not yet picky about my snacks and enjoyed most candy textures as long as they weren’t super sticky and messy to eat. These are borderline sticky, but not enough to catch into the crevices of your teeth, which I appreciate.

All in all I enjoy these quite a bit, and I imagine kids will enjoy this even more. It’s colourful, tasty and has a pleasing texture all things considered. I will definitely be getting these again, don’t you worry.

Potato starch was unexpected as the pea starch.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
