Yaokin Umaibo Corn Potage Snack Stick

To change things up, let’s do a savoury snack today. Umaibo is supposedly a Japanese term for delicious stick. I won’t get into that whole thing just right now, but the jist of it is that umaibo corn sticks are an inexpensive, tasty treat that are fairly inexpensive. Think convenient store penny snacks level of inexpensive. This type of snack has been around for ages, and have a rich history of being a childhood favourite. I’ve always known about these, but never really wanted to try it, mostly because the packaging i s so vintage looking that it never appealed to me. But not today readers – I will set aside my hesitations and finally give this a go.

This particular stick is made by a company called Yaokin. I really have no idea what they make other than snacks and being most known for their umaibo sticks, so I’ll just leave it at that. This particular flavour is the classic corn potage, which is a kind of sweet corn soup.

Have you ever tried the onion ring corn snack? It’s like a super long version of that.

I feel like I opened a can of cream corn, cause that’s what this smells like, and very strongly at that. The shape is a long cylinder, with a large hole in the middle. If I were to hazard a guess, I’d say the hole in the middle is probably how they manufacture the shape, not for any intentional design purpose. Maybe it’s shape keeps it from breaking in half as easily? I don’t know, I’m no engineer.

Biting into it, it crumbles and falls part very easily. In fact, if I were to leave it on my tongue, it would melt into nothingness. It’s very much like a Cheetos cheese puff, but slightly denser and a bit dryer. You would definitely need a bit of water after, since it will leave your mouth feeling dry. The flavour is great though, and it’s soft enough that you won’t have to worry about losing a tooth or having to chew. It tastes like a nice, savoury cream of corn soup with just the right amount of sweetness. I can see why it’s such a popular snack. If I was craving some sweet corn, I would totally buy one of these.

I could probably eat 5 of these in one sitting. Each one is only 6g.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
