Cedar Valley – Garlic & Herb Pita Chips

I find pita chips are something I have historically eaten less of compared to potatoes and corn, largely because a lot of them have a very tough texture. Now I know this may come as a shock to anyone familiar with me, who likes most things harder – my candies, my chips and my women. But it’s important to have balance in all things, and pita chips tend to be hard to the point where they take out teeth and cut your mouth with sheer ease. It’s for that reason that I don’t do it too often, because it does become a bit of a chore to eat sometimes.

I saw these and thought, why not. It’s being promoted and I figured it’s worth supporting a fellow Canuck brand. They are clear to tell you that it’s cooked in coconut oil which has me intrigued. I’m not big on coconuts in general. Coconut milk, coconut water, coconut oil, etc. It generally isn’t not my thing, but it’s never offensive or strong enough that it steers me away from an otherwise interesting flavour.

The smell is very noticeably coconut oil.

The first thing I notice when I open this is that the coconut oil smell is clear and ever present. And then of course the smell of garlic and herbs, but also a sort of, fried quality to it. Given the smell and the appearance of them, I think it’s safe to say these are fried and not baked. There’s benefits to both, and I enjoy both, but fried tend to be softer but also oilier and less dry.

The coconut oil does seem to make a bit of a difference, since the fried taste is more mild and doesn’t affect the chip’s flavour as much. It has a rich flavour but also fairly neutral one. The overall flavour isn’t too salty, and has just the right amount of garlic and herbs to make for a nice addictive bite.

They are softer than they look.

The texture is softer than what I was expecting, and I suspect it’s due to being fried. It’s also not as dried out as a usual baked pita chip is, but still has enough of a crunch to make these feel satisfying and substantial. I think I personally don’t mind dry so baked is what I generally prefer for that harder texture. But these are still crunchy enough to keep me munching away.

Overall I find these quite enjoyable and I can assure you this bag will not last long. I haven’t tried their other flavours but I can already tell this will be one of my top flavours from Cedar Valley.

At least the ingredient list isn’t too long.
