Katjes – Yoghurt Gums

Yoghurt gummies can go really well, or really bad depending on how it’s executed. The flavour of yogurt is distinct, and depending on preference as well as how it’s blended with the other flavours it can be really tasty or off putting. I figured it will be closer to the former based on past experience with Katjes. If nothing else it will be a nice little novelty flavour I try once and never again.

There’s six flavours at play – lemon, cherry, strawberry, raspberry, blueberry and pear. The lemon is got a nice rounded tangy tart flavour, and combined with the yogurt has a very nice, limoncello sort of quality to it. It’s less like your average sour lemon with lots of sugar, and more like a lemon based dessert. With lots of sugar. The distinction is important, I feel. I am also reminded of a meringue.

The pastel colour and appearance make these very appealing.

Cherry is a very vibrant cherry that’s very quickly offset with a dairy yogurt flavour. The flavour sort of reminds me of when you get a cherry cheesecake and you get a bite that has some of that cherry filling on top of the cheese. Strawberry its actually quite mild on the fruit side, and more heavy on the yogurt side. It’s like someone gave me a strawberry yogurt, but I never get close enough to the bottom to get all the strawberry.

Raspberry is very floral and has a refreshing flavour to it. It is not unlike raspberry hard candies, but with a slightly smoother finish to it which I attribute to the yogurt. Blueberry is reminiscent and somewhat nostalgic, it’s somewhere between a blueberry yogurt and and blueberry candy cane. Vibrant and yet artificially nostalgic. Pear is just like a really ripe Bartlet pear, and truthfully I don’t see how yogurt plays into this, because it’s really close to how an actual pear tastes.

Texture is a bit weird but flavours are quite good.

The texture on all of these is interesting, it’s actually most similar to the pear, where it has a little resistance when you first bite into it, but it quickly gives out and is sort of like a fruit jelly. Where it’s different from a fruit jelly though, and similar to an actual pear is that the inside is soft but has a sort of grainy quality to it. Interestingly enough the texture sort of reminds me of the skin of a Bartlet pear. It has a finish that feels gritty and is not exactly unpleasant, but unexpected.

Overall these are a nice departure from the normal flavours, but I find myself only enjoying these in small quantities. Perhaps it’s the texture, but I find myself only wanting one or two pieces in a single session, as opposed to more that I typically do. An interesting novelty but maybe something I’d think twice about before repurchasing.

You’ll be bouncing off the walls after.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
