Fritos – Chili Cheese

I sort of outgrew Fritos for the most part after childhood. One of the draws was the fact that because they were small chips, and the weight was roughly the same as other chips, it felt like I got a lot more bang for buck. It was great when I wanted to feel like I was getting a steal, even if by weight it was technically only a little higher. After I got a bit older though and grew wiser, I also found I didn’t quite enjoy that level of sodium intake.

Having said that, I am also a very sentimental person, so I like to give old snacks a chance every so often to see how things have changed or what new and exciting things they have been up to since my absence. This particular flavour seems like an obvious choice – I imagine many a chili have used Fritos as a garnish to give it a nice crunchy texture to contrast the chili. Now we can skip the middle man and just have the flavour in the chip!

You can practically smell the salt.

The texture of these little corn chip curls is crunchy, a little crispy and all in all addictive. These are the kind of snacks that come in a small enough shape that you end up shoveling a couple of handfuls into your mouth before you know what’s happened. Someone send help…

They basically look the same as the other flavours.

The flavour of these is really spot on from what I expect from typical chili. It has a distinct meaty, hearty flavour that chili usually has, and it has that distinct cumin flavour to it. Surprisingly this is not as salty as I remember some of Fritos other flavours being. This one has just the right amount of salt and has a really nice savoury flavour. I’d say if you like the general flavour of chili, this is going to be great flavour for you. In terms of the cheese, I don’t really taste anything cheese like, and I imagine they threw in cheese in the flavour name to make it less complex and so that they didn’t have to make it spicy.

This flavour is surprisingly good, and I would definitely get this again. This particular flavour is hard to find in my neck of the North, so I have to go out of my way to source it, but you can bet I will put in the time and effort to find these tasty morsels again. I just need to prepare my body for the massive sodium it will be undertaking in one sitting.

You have to be insane to only have 31 chips.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
