Hi-Chew Doubles – Apple and Melon
Next up in the saga of what fruits Hi-Chew can smash together and make work, is another pairing which doesn’t seem too weird, but I won’t know for sure until I bite into it. So this one has Fuji apple on the outside, and Hokkaido melon on the inside. I recall having the melon flavour and enjoying it thoroughly, but the apple flavours didn’t leave any impression on me if I even had it. So far the apple flavour in Hi-Chews is polarizing – it either dominates the other flavour or it’s mild enough I can’t really taste it.
The flavour of the apple is somewhat mild in comparison to the melon. Something I’m noticing is that the melon flavour is stronger at first, and I get flashes of the apples mostly from the after taste. The flavour of the melon is very creamy and has a nice sweetness to it that reminds me of cantaloupe or honeydew. I still sometimes struggle to know what the difference between the two is other than colour, but what I can confidently say is the melon flavour is on point here. The apple is a bit subtle in comparison, but the distinct tartness and acidity of apple comes through. This is a more natural apple flavour that’s more akin to a decent quality apple juice than a green apple flavour that is more common here in the west. The two come together to deliver a somewhat complex experience, where it oscillates between very rounded, melon sweetness and tart apple after taste. If I were to be mathematical and apply a split to it, flavour is melon 75% of the time while apple is 25%. Sort of surprising since apple is generally one of the easier flavours to emulate, and it tends to overpower very easily. This is kind of nice to be frank.
Texture is nothing out of the ordinary as far as Hi-Chew is concerned. That may not seem like it’s saying much, but it is given how spot on the Hi-Chew texture is. It’s got the perfect balance of chewy, almost gummy and taffy like texture while also having a smooth, creamy finish. I’m not going to keep gushing about the texture cause it should be pretty clear by now how I feel about it. Another hit, as the kids would say.
I thoroughly enjoyed the addition of a bit of tartness to the somewhat straightforward and sometimes overpowering melon flavour. I would get these again, but given the track record of these types of duo flavours, I doubt it will be coming back too soon after this season. For that reason, might as well try and find the much more common melon flavour.
