Hi-Chew Doubles – Fig & Momotaro Grape

I’m always excited to try a new Hi-Chew flavour. Doubly so when one or both of the flavours involves grape. Pun intended. I can’t say I’m too experienced with figs. Sometimes it shows up in a traditional old Chinese veggie soup, and other times it shows up in a cookie. It’s just not really a staple in my cuisine that it is in some other cultures. That being said I never say no to trying a new flavour, especially when it’s one of my favourite brands cranking it out.

I must admit the packaging is quite enticing.

I love the Momotaro grape flavour, as I do with any green grape variety really. Fig is the interesting flavour here, as I haven’t had it and as far as I remember, Hi-Chew hasn’t used it before. The piece starts off strong with the sweet, delicious green grape flavour that it’s famous for. As I chew I get to the center which is where the fig is contained. The fig flavour is pretty spot on from what I remember of the ones I’ve had. It has a flavour I can best describe as a combination of honey, ever so slight smokiness, and a mild nutty flavour. It also has a somewhat savoury quality to it, so you can imagine it’s flavour enhancing a savoury dish. The flavour is very distinct, so whether it’s a good or bad thing depends on how you feel about it. I’m reminded me more of savoury dishes like on top of a flatbread, more than it reminds me of fig jam or fig newtons.

The inside is a reddish orange.

Fig flavours may not be for everyone, and to be honest it was a bit jarring for me at first because I wasn’t expecting it to be so strong. I am curious how fig would pair with a citrus flavour, or a different flavour than the grape. The grape doesn’t seem to help the fig much, and is kind of doing it’s own thing before the fig overpowers it.

Talking about the texture feels like beating a dead horse at this point – it’s got the perfect level of chewiness and has yet to be rivaled by any brand I’ve yet to try. I assure you I am looking, though honestly probably not as hard as I should be given how enamored I am with Hi-Chew. It’s a curse, really. Until said opportunity, you’ll just have to take my word that it is indeed the best on the market as of writing this review, and I am still actively searching for a competitor.

Would I do this again? Sadly, probably not. As tasty as the grape is, I can’t get past the fig flavour. Were I someone who enjoyed this type of fig flavour, maybe I would consider this again. As it stands now though, I don’t so I won’t. I’d personally just save my money and spend it on a pure grape flavour.

Same as it ever was.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
