Hi-Chew Doubles – Pink and Golden Peach

Whenever I think about peach I am reminded of the clear, visual image that Roald Dahl painted for me in his famous novel, James and the Giant Peach. The way he described the peach flesh and the juices, to this day makes my mouth water a little to think about. It’s that imagery that reminds me of why I have a pretty positive opinion of peaches, and to a certain extent stone fruits. It also reminds me of how susceptible children are to advertising and brainwashing, but let’s not get into that today.

I’ve tried a lot of peach flavours by Hi-Chew at this point, and the truth is I can really only tell a few of them apart. The big contrast is between the pink and golden varieties. The pink ones tend to be more floral, earthy and have a cleaner, mild taste while the golden one has a more distinct, almost savoury peach flavour to them. I can see the two coming together to create a slightly superior peach flavour by marrying the two profiles. Then again, that really just makes a combination of two flavours that already taste quite similar. I wonder how many non-peach lovers or typical snackers would even be able to discern any difference. What if there isn’t any and it’s all in our heads?!

Like a sweet, peach hugging another peach tight.

As I remembered, the white peach that comprises the outer layer has that mild, floral flavour that reminds me of a peach tea. When I get to the center, that’s when I’m hit with the distinct sweet, peach flavour that is more like the typical peach juice. The combination of the mild flavour of the pink peach on the outer layer and the golden peach in the centre creates a sort of gradual build up of peach flavour. The experience is kind of like biting into an actual fruit where the inner layer is more flavourful. Oddly enough that’s not my general experience with peaches, that are fairly similar throughout.

The texture is good ol’ Hi-Chew, just the right amount of soft, creaminess but that nice tooth bounce like a cross between taffy and bubble gum. It’s really hard to fault Hi-Chew texture for anything, other than the fact that it reminds me each time that the experience is over far too soon.

Do I think there’s anything special about this flavour? Not really. Would I get it again? Sure why not. To be quite frank, I can’t tell much difference between a lot of the white and yellow peach pieces, and really can discern the difference between the two distinct varieties. One has a more clean sweet flavour, while the other has a more nectarine like quality to it and an almost savoury hint to it. If you enjoy peach flavours in general though, it’s hard to go wrong with this.

Old faithful.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
