Hi-Chew – Lemon Lucky Roulette

As usual, I feel the need to clarify that I do not enjoy citrus flavours, and while I can admire that Hi-Chew does it quite well, I don’t particularly care for it. What I do care for is interesting one time gimmicks and tricks, so here we are with a product that is entirely lemons. Yay.

The gimmick here is that out of the 8 pieces, some are the normal lemon flavour and some are the 6x sour lemon. What’s interesting is that I’ve had the super lemon flavour before, but I can’t recall if it was 6 times as sour, as they market it here. Also worth reminding everyone that I’m not big on sour; I just saw another gimmicky looking pouch of Hi-Chew and pulled the trigger without a second thought.

I see there are yellow and orange wrappers, but I don’t know if it would be that simple. Just to be sure though, I’m going to try two of each and see if there’s a pattern or not. I mean, the pack only has 8 so we don’t have much of a sample size to work with, bear with me.

I’m a little scared to find out what’s what.

So it seems that they did make it easy to distinguish between which one is the normal flavour and which isn’t, just by the wrapper. The yellow wrapper is the sweet, familiar lemon flavour that has become a staple in the Hi-Chew roster. The orange wrapper on the other hand…the second I put this into my mouth I could tell instantly that this was going to be a sour time. Right away I’m hit with the mouth puckering tartness of lemon and what I can only assume is a healthy concentration of malic and citric acid. To give you a sense of how sour this is, my eyes started twitching and I can feel some sweat build on my scalp and oddly enough, under my eyes. This is usually the same physiological response I get from eating something spicy. Weird how it’s the same for those two sensations.

If you were wondering, they all look and smell the same.

The texture is nothing out of the ordinary for Hi-Chew, which believe me is a good thing. The one redeeming thing about eating something so sour for someone who doesn’t enjoy it, is at least the texture is nice. Though truthfully, the flavour is sour enough through and through that the experience was not for me. If you like sour though, this is perfect. I personally prefer where the sour passes and some sweet comes through.

So where does that leave us? Well, lets put it this way, if you enjoy sour and lemon, this is a no-brainer. No matter what piece you get, it’s a winner. Would l suggest this to anyone else? Probably only masochists who enjoy torturing their palettes for the sake of it. This one definitely got my scalp sweating a little.

Interesting that they have different nutritional breakdowns.

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
