Hi-Chew – Melon Soft Serve Ice Cream
I’ve mentioned before that Hi-Chew has it’s forte in fruit flavours. The few instances where they’ve tried to do other flavours like pastries have not been great, at least in my opinion. They skirted the rules a bit by trying some fruit adjacent flavours, like yogurt and fruit and those are honestly pretty good because Yakult and Calpis are amazing. Today’s flavour seems like a fairly safe choice, given their track record, so this doesn’t strike me as too much of a risky buy.
So unlike the usual melon, this flavour is supposed to have the addition of the soft serve ice cream flavour. To me that means they mixed some vanilla or dairy flavour into it, which makes perfect sense. Anyone who has had a Melona bar will know that melon can work very well as an ice cream flavour, so naturally the combination of melon and soft serve ice cream seems equally enticing.
I’ve said before that Hi-Chew does a really good melon flavour, and captures the essence of the fruit with it’s sweet, rounded flavour. It’s really hard to describe that straight forward, sweet melon flavour other than to say it’s round and smooth, and doesn’t have any edges or subtlety to it. Where this particular flavour deviates is the addition of the soft-serve – instead of having that fruity finish, there’s a sweet dairy quality to it that is much like a standard vanilla ice cream. It does such a good job in fact, that I now want to get an actual melon ice cream. The combination of melon and dairy is truly a mouthwatering combination.
Texture is nothing short of amazing, but you knew that was coming right? I don’t think the flavour has too much bearing on the texture, so it’s basically the same as any others that come in a standard stick format with the little foil wraps on each. The perfect combination of bouncy, chewy texture combined with that soft, almost creamy like finish makes these the king of chewy candy to this day. A part of me wonders if they’ll ever be unseated, or it will be one of those tragic situations where you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain.
Melon flavours are a strong suit for the brand, and this is no exception. I honestly can’t fathom how people won’t enjoy this, and I’m optimistic that the reception will be strong enough that they either contemplate bringing this back next year, or they start doing other fruit soft serve flavours. Mango soft serve when?
