Hi-Chew – Ougon Peach

Are y’all getting tired of me and my Hi-Chews yet? Too bad. I’m going to keep doing them. You can blame Morinaga for releasing so many damn flavours all the time. It’s their fault, not mine. I just report the findings, not make the candy.

Today we have Ougon Peach. I haven’t the faintest clue what’s so special about this peach. Like any other peach it looks like someones butt crack. It does seem that this variety peach is rarer, and because of how tasty it is, is often eaten raw to fully appreciate the fruit, as opposed to being used to cook with or make wine with, of normal or “lesser” peaches. Previously, I did a review of the peach variety pack, but that didn’t include this peach flavour. Only one way to find out the difference.

Has a mango-like quality to it.

Whereas the usual peach flavours have a very sweet smell to them, this one has an almost earthy quality to it. It smells a lot like the skin of the peach, than the flesh of the peach. I actually find this encouraging, as Hi-Chew tends to go for accuracy in flavour than just straight up sweetness like a lot of companies, so I appreciate that.

Similar to the golden peach in the peach variety pack I review prior, this peach has a very aromatic and sweet flavour that is similar to what you would find in yellow or orange fleshed peaches. That isn’t to say it is overly sweet though. It has a very natural, floral sweetness to it that only a quality peach could give you, and has just enough flavour to make your mouth water, without leaving behind a strong after taste either. Overall, it’s a very refreshing flavour.

If it looks like golden peach and tastes like golden peach…

Unfortunately, I am not enough of a connoisseur to differentiate this from the golden peach flavour. Both are very similar, and the only thing I can really say in favour of this one is that it seems to leave less of an aftertaste. That isn’t to say the golden peach left a strong one, but this one leaves almost no sign of it ever having been there, which is actually a good thing. It’s like having a nice sweet, juicy refreshing peach on a warm summers day. It’s got that ninja flavour – it’s in and out before you notice anythings different. Like it was never there. I bet those are the kinds of peaches that Roald Dahl was thinking of when describing the giant peach.

Unlike some other flavours, you could probably pop all 12 pieces in the stick, and your mouth wouldn’t notice much of a difference. It’s got a nice clean flavour to it, and finishes strong without leaving debris behind. To me, this piece is definitely a winner and I’d go for it again for sure. Bonus of this flavour, it can serve as a bit of a palate cleanse. Although I would have to wonder what you’re palate cleansing for if you’re already eating these. But hey, no judgement.

How do they get it to 19 calories every time?!

zbearviking

From the frigid, majestic North (Canada), hails a creature like no other. Is it a bear that took up viking-ing? Or a viking that turned into a bear? Perhaps it is beyond human comprehension what the creature truly is, much like Bigfoot or Nessie. What we do know, is that much like everything else in the universe, it is made of star stuff.
