Hi-Chew Premium – Golden Kiwi
I remember the first time I had a golden kiwi. It was truly a revelation. up until that point I assumed that most kiwis were super tart unless they were just the perfect level of ripeness. Too ripe and it’s all mashy and mushy. But golden kiwis, I get why they are so expensive on average. They have a clean, simple natural sweetness to them. Something about them is refreshing and yet it finishes so clean it leaves you wanting more.
These smell distinct, but not necessarily in a kiwi way. It actually sort of reminds me of some sort of tangy green apple in a sense, but not quite as apple forward, if that makes any sense. It’s similar to my experience with other kiwi flavours where I get a hint of that apple tartness.
I’m not sure if this is the flavour or texture, but in the past Hi-Chew premium pouches I’ve had it’s been consistent that these tend to cause a mouth watering effect. What I mean by this is that they somehow stimulate the salivary glands to create a mouth watering sensation that you won’t usually get from the stick pieces. I’m not sure if it’s the flavour itself, or the texture that lends itself to it, but I quite like it, truth be told. The flavour itself is very standard kiwi affair. Kiwi as a fruit is generally either very tart or slightly sweet, but it has a very light sweetness to it that is somewhat hard to emulate in artificial flavours. These are good though, and I have a similar light flavour to it. It doesn’t leave too much of an aftertaste which I like.
I’m not sure what it is about the premium ball format, but the texture is a bit of a contrast from the standard stick pieces. They are very soft on the outside and inside, but still has a bit of that taffy like texture. If anything, I’d say these are more like a mochi texture, which I love.
These are a very pleasant experience overall. The texture is great, and the flavour is a good pairing to it. These finish clean and in typical Hi-Chew fashion, leave me wanting more. I would get these again, and while not my top choice versus something like grape or melon, these are still high on the list.
