Hi-Chew Premium – Yogurt
Previously, I mentioned that yogurt has always been a big thing in Japan and Asia as a whole, but it seems to be in recent years that the drink has become a mainstay in terms of being an actual flavour. As someone who grew up with it, I absolutely love the distinct, tangy flavour of it. I can see why it’s not for everyone though, and widespread adoption as a flavour isn’t quite there yet.
I feel like Hi-Chew Premium is a good way for the brand to test to see if there’s a market for the flavour in a chewy form. In previous reviews, I’ve mentioned that the premium line is a different take on the candy – they come in a small resealable pouch and the candy itself is in a small gumball shape with a slightly crunchy, thin candy shell.
The smell of these is overwhelmingly yogurt in the form of Yakult or Calpis. There is absolutely no doubt or mistaking it for anything else, if you have indeed tried those yogurt drinks. The shape and size is almost spherical, and the shape of a typical gumball. The texture is also kind of similar to a gumball, in the sense that it is firmer and chewier than the typical stick piece that you might normally be used to. While I do prefer the old fashioned rectangular shape in general, I feel like in this particular case the texture works better with the yogurt flavour.
In terms of flavour, as I said before if you have ever had any asian yogurt drink like Yakult or Calpis, this tastes exactly like that. It’s almost scary how close it is. For those who have never tried the drink, the best way I can describe it is it’s got a very distinct, tangy sweet flavour, and tastes like if you took Greek yogurt, sugar and lemon juice and mixed it altogether into a drink. It’s really quite delicious.
Out of all the Hi-Chew Premium flavours I have tried so far, I have to say that yogurt lends itself best to the format. If you’re on the fence about trying the different texture format of Hi-Chew, this one might just be the gateway to get you into trying the others. I would certainly recommend this for any beginners.
